1945 onward- By this time technology had expanded so machines were mass producing products in factories, a majority of jobs were held in this industry.
Modern Period
Post Modern Period
1920- The age of the “New Woman” had recently started. Women started to work outside the home, but not for pay. They did jobs like teachers, nurses and telephone operators.
1930- Most were unemployed in the 1930’s. Farming was a very common job because the family could eat what they grew. Others worked for the wealthy like being a nanny or housekeeper.
1940- during the 1940s WW2 was going on, therefore a lot of jobs in factories were created making supplies for war. Slide6

1910- 1920 cheap material ,military uniforms
1920s- 1930 flannel, cuffed trousers
1930s- 1938 three piece suits, more hats
1940-1945 military uniforms, lounge suits
1945- present: more casual, some wore suits
Women’s Style
1910- 1920 puffy blouses, fluted skirts
1920s- 1930 “boyish look”, cloche hats became popular
1930s- 1938 waist high dresses, more buttons1940s- present: neck lines changed, more fasonableSlide7
Families had 3-5 kids
Wealthy families had nannies who took care of and watched the kids
Poor families could barely make enough to support their own at home
Depending on the social class; typically just the men worked
During the war however women and children were forced to work in factories and mines to support the economy

Famous Literature Modern Period
1914-1945
Dubliners- James Joyce
Dubliners was published in 1914. James Joyce published Dubliners; his first major novel he published a book of poems. This book is a collection of 15 short stories. The first one beginning as a young child and aging has the stories go on.
Virginia Woolf- Mrs Dalloway
Mrs. Dalloway was published in 1924. This book is said to be the best work Virginia Woolf published. Throughout the book Mrs Dalloway reflects on her life wondering if she could be happier and make her life more important Slide9
Rebecca- Daphne Du Maurier
This
book was published in 1938. In this book the main character Rebecca searches for happiness by learning how to understand her mind. Throughout the book she faces her darkest secrets just to find happiness.
And Then There Were None- Agatha Christie
And Then There Were None was published in 1939. Ten strangers are brought onto a mysterious island. The host accuses all ten of them of having a guilty secret and they must pay. Slide10
Funeral Blues- W.H. Auden
This poem was written in 1936. It focuses on a man who lost his spouse. Dealing with the loss of his of a loved one he begs for silence from everyday objects. He wants this death to be known by everyone.
The Tower- W.B.Yeats
The tower is a book of poems published in 1928. The poems "Sailing to Byzantium," "Leda and the Swan," and "Among School Children” found in this book are considered to be some of yeats best work. Slide11

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the rings- J.R.R. Tolkien
This Lord of the Rings was published in 1954. The story was originally created as a sequel to J.R.R Tolkien’s book “The Hobbit.” This story set in “middle earth.” A dark lord is looming over center earth searching for the ring he lost. Most of the dark lord’s power is held in this ring.
1984- George Orwell
This book was published in 1949. In 1984 the world is divided into three countries globally. The countries are under control of “Big Brother” who controls everyone behavior and thoughts. The main character Winston sets up a group who plan to overthrow the government. Slide12
Lord of the Flies- William Golding
Lord of the Flies was published in 1954. A group of boys survive a plane crash find themselves stranded on a pacific island. The boys are forced to hunt for food and create shelter on their own shelter to survive.
Watership Down- Richard Adams
Watership Down was published in 1978. Fiver, sees a vision of danger to the rabbit's warren. Him and seven other rabbits leave Cowslip. Slide13
Death of a Naturalist- Seamus Heaney
Death of a Naturalist a collection of poems published in 1966. This was Seamus Heaney second book of poetry to be published

The main point of these collection of poems is to show how growing up will change your view on things.
Howl- Allen Ginsberg
Howl is filled with three sections of poetry. In the first the narrator tells us about he has witnessed people of his generation destroying their minds. Asking who destroyed their minds. In the second he is asking what destroyed their minds. In the last section he dedicates it to a friend with the question of where people destroyed their minds.
