Rotarians have contributed over US$1.1 billion to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative .
We have also received US$1.0 billion in matching funds from the Gates Foundation which we have donated to polio eradication We brought the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the polio eradication effort first through Bill Gates Sr. The BMGF has now spent over US$4.0 billion on polio eradication.
We convinced the US government to fund the Global Polio Eradication effort and the US Govt has now spent over $3.5 billion. Same with Canada at $630 Million USD. And the UK at $1.6 Billion USD. And Japan at $570 million USD.
The goal of the Rotary PolioPlus Program is the global certification of polio eradication
Slide7Our Impact on the Cause of Polio Eradication
19 million people are walking on earth who would otherwise have been paralyzed. An estimated 650,000 cases are now prevented each year
Since 1988, 3 billion children have received oral polio vaccine In 2019, more than 430 million children in 40+countries were vaccinated using 1.2 billion doses of oral polio vaccine.
We have gone four years without a case of wild polio virus outside Pakistan and Afghanistan. We have helped with other vaccine preventable diseases through PolioPlus and have assisted the world in responding to Ebola and Covid-19.
