Objectives of the briefing

To be familiar with the Early Career Framework (ECF) based reform process in order to make informed choices regarding delivery option

To develop a clear understanding of your school’s statutory responsibilities for the Early Career Teacher (ECT) induction

To increase understanding of the ECF-based training options for schools to choose from when planning their ECT induction programme

To be familiar with choice regarding the Appropriate Body

Slide4

Context

Reforms are part of the Government’s teacher recruitment and retention strategy which aims to improve teachers’ training and development opportunities.

The DfE have created frameworks, validated by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF), to underpin each stage – initial teacher training, early career support, specialisation and leadership.

The ECF builds on and compliments the ITT Core Content Framework. We will look at the three options for delivery later.

The Golden Thread

Through the revised Initial Teacher Training Core Content Framework and the implementation of the Early Career Framework, the DfE are now supporting teachers in the first years of their career with a structured two-year induction into the profession.

The NPQs and New Headteacher Programme build on this foundation to provide continuous career pathways with training and support for teachers and leaders at all levels.

The revised suite of specialist and leadership NPQs will complete the golden thread from initial teacher training through to school leadership, rooting teacher and leader development in the best available evidence and collective wisdom of the profession.

ECF Component Programme Parts

Components of the programme:

ECT self-directed study

ECT mentor meetings, including Module Audits

ECT training

Mentor Training

The ECF is presented around the Teachers’ Standards but for clarity, the ECF is not, and should not be used, as an assessment framework.

The appropriate body is responsible for checking new teachers receive statutory entitlements, are fairly and consistently assessed and receive a programme of support and training based on the ECF.

Option 3:

If you choose to design and deliver your own ECF-based programme

Fidelity checks are required

Cost to school = £750.00 per year per school

Slide25

Potential pitfalls in planning, if using the school based approach (option 3):

You will need to identify a robust rationale for sequencing

All ECF statements should be covered in sufficient depth or breadth and mentor topics must be aligned with the ECT training independent study

Slide26

Induction Tutor and Mentor Roles

Two discrete roles:

The Induction Tutor continues to provide regular monitoring, support and coordination of assessment and is responsible for making judgements about the ECT in consultation with the ECT

The Mentor has a

central role in the new induction

process in providing ongoing advice and support, including attending regular mentoring sessions and mentor training where appropriate

The roles should be held by different individuals except in exceptional circumstances

If an ECT is fast tracked can they still access the second-year training programme?

What is the minimum period of working in a school that must be completed for it to count towards induction?

Will an ECT still progress onto MPS 2 at the beginning of their second year?

If an ECT has been employed for one term cover can that count towards their induction?
