Slide2Introduction
Quarry Mining is a provider of drilling consumables to all of Australia's underground coal mines and east coast tunnelling projects.
Other in-house capabilities:
pneumatic equipment sales, service and repair
Engineering design
Light fabrication work
Heat Treatment
Australian design and manufacture
Offices in Newcastle, Mackay, Sydney and Melbourne
Employ 70 staff (7 ex-underground coal miners for expertise)
Customise products to suit specific strata conditions
Undertaken over 100 underground visits over the past 3 years for product testing, trialling and training.

M16 versus Rope Thread
Moved from machining to casting for many of the designs as it allowed better bit body geometry
Suitability to Ground Conditions

Thrust to rotation speed
Slide9Tungsten Carbide
Best longevity whilst still maintaining drill speedUltimately the best combination of toughness and hardness
Design to suit particular ground conditions
Understand the need for PCD to ensure best value for money
Slide10Product Usage – Tungsten Carbide Vs PCD
When deciding whether to use tungsten carbide or PCD drill bits several factors must be taken into account.
Strata (MPa)
Limitations of drilling equipment
Time factors involved – drill times and delays (if bits need to be changed mid hole)
The table below outlines considerations of drill bits vs strata hardness
RECOMMENDED STRATA HARDNESS (
MPa
) FOR ROTARY DRILLING

TUNGSTEN CARBIDE (TILES)

PCD
40-80MPa
Please Note: PCD Must be able to drill 5.5 or more times the metreage than a tungsten carbide wing bit to be cost effective. This is based on 28mm PCD bit drilling.
Slide11Product Usage – Drill Rod Wear
Inspection of drill rods should be carried out pre shift and after completion of each and every hole
.
The major areas that wear will become visibly present are around the following:
Drives ends – Excessive rounding or scoring of square drives and spanner flats
Transition zone from rod ends to round section of drill rods – scoring or cracking of weld zones
The drill rod shown above had been in service for 16 shifts and is showing initial signs of wear
Slide12Product Usage – Drill Rod Wear Continued
Other less obvious signs of wear indicating that a drill rod should be replaced include:
Bending – Due to an excessive load being placed on drill rod or the eventual weakening of the rod over time from fatigue
Gripper Jaw Damage – significant scoring of a drill rod will create weak points in the drill rod and should be replaced if found.
Quarry Mining recommends the use of anti-seize on all drill bit threads and extension rod joints.
The drill rod shown above had been damaged by the gripper jaws on a joy miner when in operation. The scoring was present over a 150mm section of the drill rod.
Slide13Product Usage – Drill Rod No Go Gauges
No Go Gauges are available to easily identify rods that have been used beyond their recommended life.
Available for Single Pass Round and MF drill strings
Quarry Mining No Go Gauges notify the user that critical dimensions of the respective drill rods have been reduced by a significant percentage and further use could lead to unpredictable failure
