To identify why effective hand washing is important.
Today we will learn effective hand washing techniques and why it is so important.
You will probably know by now that since COVID19 you will have had to wash your hands more frequently.
Slide4First of all let’s talk about school. Some of you will be returning to school on Monday. You might be aware that school might look a little bit different from before but not to worry this will be things to keep you safe.
Here are some links to stories to help you understand what to expect if you are retuning to school. Don’t worry if this all feels a bit strange as your teachers will be there to help and remind you of ways to keep safe.

In school and at home too, you will be expected to wash your hands lots of times during the day. This is to help keep way germs that could be harmful to our body.
Slide5Let’s think about germs.
What are germs?
Germs are tiny micro-organisms that live all around us. There are good germs and bad germs. Mostly they are invisible unless you use a magnifying glass.
Slide6Germ Hotspots
A germ hotspot is something that you would touch lots of time in a day.
Can you think
of
things around your home that you would touch lots of times in a day?
Slide7Germ Hotspots
How many did you get?
Germ hotspots can include:
Door handles
Furniture
Toys
Light switches
Remote controls
Surfaces
Taps
Phones
Laptops/ tablets
Look at these pictures. Which is
not
a germ hotspot? Can you explain why?
Slide8How do germs spread?
Germs can be spread through the air and by touch. This is why it is important to sneeze into a tissue (or elbow) and to wash hands frequently to lower the spread of germs.
What would happen if you didn’t wash your hands?
Slide9Activity
1
You are going to carry out an activity to prove how germs spread through touch.
P
lace both
hands into a bowl of eco-friendly
glitter (flour, sugar, chocolate power could be a good substitute).
Imagine that the pieces of eco-friendly glitter are germs. Where could the germs have been picked up from
?
Now keep the
glitter germs on
your hands and do
not wash
your
hands
!
Every member of your
family
should now shake hands with
you. What would happen if you touched other items in your house?
Slide10What did you notice when you shook other peoples hands?
How
did the germs
spread
?
K
eep your glitter germs on your hands for now. I wonder where else the germs might spread.
Slide11Protection
Can you think of ways of protecting yourself from catching germs?
Slide12Protection
Eating healthy
catching a sneeze or cough into a tissue
washing hands
