Solution

Streamline courses to reduce optionsCreate an 8-week, 2 (non)credit course, Mat 007, Foundations of Algebra, to cover topics previously taught in Mat 011 and Mat 014 and where the focus is on what each student does not know

Math Placement Scores for Elementary Algebra Test

Students taking Mat 007 will take a diagnostic the first day of class to determine their individual course of study. Students can prepare by downloading Basic Math and Basic Algebra review sheets

from

the Testing Center website

Mat 007 Course Description

This course integrates topics of arithmetic and introductory algebra. There are 9 modules that are covered: Whole numbersFractions and Mixed Numbers

Decimals

Introduction to Algebra and the Real Number System

Ratio, Proportion and Percent

Linear Equations and Inequalities

Introduction to Graphing

Exponents and Polynomials

Factoring Polynomials

6

Slide7

Mat 007 Description (continued)

The course is self paced, not lecturedThe course is pass/failAll work follows the students if they do not complete the course in 8 weeks

7

Slide8

Mat 007 Procedure

Students take a diagnostic test called the PathbuilderThe Pathbuilder determines which of the 9 modules each student is required to complete

Any student who passes at least 8 of the modules on the

Pathbuilder

test places out of the class and goes to the math department for proper

placement

Slide9

Mat 007 Procedure (continued)

In modules that need to be completed, students…Take a diagnostic test for the module called the Skills Check

Work on module activities

Take a mastery test, they must score at least 70%

When all required modules are mastered, the student has passed the course

Conclusion

The world today demands strong skills in mathematics, not only in the workforce, but also in everyday life. These demands will only increase over time. The underlying principal of the redesigned developmental track at CCM is to promote success, without lowering standards and expectations, while strengthening math skills and moving students to credited math courses in less time.
