Summary

The Center for Bionics and Pain Research (CBPR) is looking for participants in a study to control powered prosthetic legs. The study is approved by the Swedish Ethical Review Authority (dnr. 2019-05943).BackgroundWe have successfully developed an interface that allows upper limb prostheses to connect with user’s nerves, muscles and skeleton, which considerably improves control and provides sensory feedback. We are now developing a similar technology for prosthetic legs, but we first need to evaluate the algorithms to control the prosthetic leg. This is a non-invasive experiment where we will place electrodes on the surface of your skin to record muscular activity.

How is the study performed? You will be invited up to 2 times (but probably only once) within 1 week; we will fully reimburse you. We will assess your control of a powered prosthetic limb (a leg with motors) and a passive prosthetic limb. We will do this with physical tests, gait analysis, and a virtual limb. Visits will take place at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Mölndal, Sweden. Who are you?Male or female aged 18 – 80 years oldUnilateral transfemoral amputation fitted with an osseointegrated implant (e.g., OPRA) for a minimum of 2 years. A minimum of 55 cm from the floor to the top of your safety device (AXOR).Walk without pain and without gait aids.

DO YOU HAVE A LOWER LIMB AMPUTATION?

As a result of your participation:

You will be able to experience what it feels like to control a bionic limb with your muscles and use a prosthetic leg that provides you with power when you climb stairs for example.

You will help us to develop technology to reduce discomfort and increase mobility in people with lower limb amputations who may need a bit of help walking in order to gain full independence This will enable individuals with lower limb amputations to:Rely more on their prosthetic limb and so lead a more independent life.‘Feel’ the ground under their prosthetic limb and move in a more natural way which may result in fewer falls.
