Prayer: Good Shepherd Luke 15: 1-7

Points to Stress:1. God loves us so much that is doesn’t make sense to us humans2. There is much rejoicing in heaven when we confess our sins and come back to God!

“What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the lost oned

until he finds it? And when he does find it, he sets it on his shoulders with great joy and, upon his arrival home, he calls together his friends and neighbors and says to them, ‘Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.’ I tell you, in just the same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of

repentance.

Example Meditation:

What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the lost one until he finds it? Imagine yourself as a shepherd. You have 100 sheep you are constantly trying to keep track of. You count them over and over again to make sure you didn’t lose any. You protect them from wolves and robbers trying to steal them. Then, one day, one is missing. One out of one hundred. You didn’t really notice, but had to count three times to make sure one really was missing. You think, no one will notice one out of one hundred sheep missing! It probably was a small one anyway. I’m sure another one will be born soon to replace him. But Jesus doesn’t think that way. God doesn’t think that way. Jesus cares so much about each individual person, that he would leave the ninety-nine in the desert alone to go find the one lost. He does that for us too. How do you feel when you are lost? Scared, alone, sad, unsafe? Jesus will come. Do not be afraid. He will not stop looking until he finds you! And when the shepherd does find the lost sheep, he sets it on his shoulders with great joy and, upon his arrival home, he calls together his friends and neighbors and says to them, ‘Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.’ I tell you, in just the same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance. When Jesus finds us and we go to Confession, we return home, and there is a great party in heaven! Imagine this party! What kind of food, decorations, and activities will be there? But there is no party for those who do not repent. Make sure to repent and go to confession so you can be a part of the big great party!

Reconciliation Facts

Reconciliation means “eyelash to eyelash.” When we sin, we turn away from God. When we go to Reconciliation, we turn back to God and re-establish that relationship

The wages of sin is death, but when we repent we can go to heaven!

Jesus died to take away all our sins. That is why he had to die. Because the path of sin leads to death. He died in place of us, so we can live.

Sin hurts Jesus, everyone around us, and ourselves

Confession or Reconciliation is asking Jesus forgiveness and saying sorry for all the hurt we caused. He forgives us and takes away our sins. We can never undo our sins, but Jesus died to take them on himself.

Our sins are forgiven in Reconciliation, and we receive special grace and powers to help us overcome those sins.

Slide6

Reconciliation Facts

When we go to Reconciliation, we must be sorry for our sins, say them aloud, and then do the penance given to us by the priest.

We must go to Reconciliation once a year, but it is better to go more often. Try once a month. The more you go, the holier and closer to Jesus you will be. Pope St. John Paul II and St. Mother Theresa went almost everyday!

The priest acts as Jesus, so it is really Jesus you are confessing to and who forgives you.

The priest can’t tell anyone your sins-even to the point of death, and forgets them quickly, so no one else will ever know

Jesus forgives all sins we ask forgiveness for. Jesus even forgives murders and the worst people in the world! Once you confess,

don’t worry about your sins anymore.

Activities

Activites

Iodine and Bleach experiment: take a glass of water; pour Iodine (our sins) into it while naming off common sins and the water becomes all dirty and sinful; pour a little bleach (going to Reconciliation) into the mixture and it becomes completely clear again because Jesus takes away our sinsShaving Cream mania: take a bottle of shaving cream and a glass or cup; the shaving cream bottle fits nicely in the glass, so all this really nice cool shaving cream should fit in there too! Start emptying the shaving cream bottle without paying attention to the mess you're making (the kids go crazy over this); when you finish, talk about how much the shaving cream expanded; this is like God's love, especially in the sacrament of Reconciliation; it cannot be contained!

Practice mock confessions; this is really great for any kids who get really nervous to go! The little ones really love this one too. Make sure to use fake sins! Here is a guide to confession.Mad Lib retelling of the Good Shepherd/Lost Sheep

Accident vs. Sin game to help understand the difference

Slide8

Mortal vs. Venial sinsMortal has 3 requirements:1. Grave matter (big deal/think 10 Commandments)2. Full Knowledge (you know it is wrong)

3. Full Consent (no one is forcing you)Mortal sins cut us completely off from God. We can no longer receive communion and are destined for Hell. We must confess these sins. Do it as soon as possible so we can be close to God again!Venial are all the rest of our sins. We should confess all our venial sins frequently (once a month). Holy Water and at Mass can also cleanse us of these.
