How to answer this question:

In Source A, the boy enjoyed activities that involved people whereas in Source B, the boy enjoyed activities where he was isolated and played alone. In Source A, the writer describes how the boy loved “running up to people and waiting for them to twang his lips like a ruler on a table.” This suggests that he enjoys interacting with people because he seems eager to approach people. It also stresses how he is confident to involve other people in his fun. However, in Source B, the writer describes how her sun “cut paper upon the floor” and “tumbled down card-houses”. Both of these activities show that this child prefers to be alone and doesn’t necessarily need to play with other people to have fun.

Using details from both sources, write a summary of the different activities the boy in Source A and the boy in Source B enjoyed.

How to answer this question:

In Source A, the boy enjoyed activities that involved people whereas in Source B, the boy enjoyed activities where he was isolated and played alone. First of all summarise a difference between the two in a sentence.

It also stresses how he is confident to involve other people in his fun.Give a quote from Text A and explain clearly what the quote shows. You won’t be given any marks in this question for analysing language!

Overall the boys show a key difference in the approach to involving others in their activities for fun.

Using details from both sources, write a summary of the different activities the boy in Source A and the boy in Source B enjoyed.

Slide13

Top Tips:Find two differences = two paragraphs.Summarise ideas don’t analyse language.

Don’t treat the texts separately; keep explaining how they link/contrast.Use quotations! Only 8 marks so don’t spend longer than 10 minutes – KNOW CLEARLY WHAT THE DIFFERENCE IS BEFORE YOU WRITE OTHERWISE YOU WILL END UP WITH 3-4 MARKS (SOME ATTEMPT)

Slide14

The ways the prisoners are treated on their first day at prison are different.Use details from both Sources to write a summary of the different ways the prisoners were

treated.

Unfairly?

With respect?

As if they were animals?

Slide15

Time to now have a go…

Read the two Sources about prisons.

Source A: from a 19

th

century article from an anonymous prisoner describing his first day in a prison called Newgate Gaol.

Source B: from a diary of a modern day prisoner.

The ways the prisoners are

treated

on their first day at prison are different.

Use details from both Sources to write a summary of the different ways the prisoners were

treated

.

Slide16

Spend 5 minutes collecting your thoughtsTip: Make a little table and jot some differences you found SUPER QUICK NOT IN A CHILLED MANNER TO RAISE MY BLOOD PRESSURE UNTIL I POP

A ‘clear’ paragraph

In Source A, the prison treated the inmate as if he was worthless from the moment he stepped into the prison because he was strip-searched whereas in Source B, the inmate was treated more positively and wasn’t hassled in a humiliating way about her clothes. In Source A, the inmate was ordered to take of their clothes and then the officer took his “garments one by one” and “thumped them violently on the stone floor” after searching them. This highlights how the inmate was immediately strip searched and left feeling violated and intimidated so that they understood the lack of power that he had from the outset. Whereas

in Source B, the inmate said that there was “no strip search” and whilst she had too many clothes, she was allowed to “keep just 12 tops” and “six bottoms”. This shows how she was treated a lot more fairly and was given more freedom to keep her clothes. Furthermore it reveals that she was treated as if she was allowed to still be comfortable and still feel as if she could keep her identity from outside the prison.

Sum up the difference you are focusing on.
