A sustainable, healthier world for animals and humans

Provide solutions and technologies to areas of public concern such as climate change, food chain safety and security, and animal welfare.

Agricultural effects on the planet and reaching carbon net-zero

Animal rearing is currently a carbon-intensive activity due to the release of gases from food production. Work with experts to explore less-intensive farming methods. Trial sites include Sparsholt College’s Salmonid and Rearing Trials Centre, salmonid hatchery and others across the region.

Work with local and global charities to create new conservation and animal care solutions

As humans further encroach on the habitats of wild animals, solutions are needed to help monitor, protect and enhance their populations. Collaborate with WWF, Surrey Wildlife Trust, RSPCA, Marwell Wildlife, and Blue Cross, all of whom are located within the region, in advancing

solutions for animal

health

and well-being.

Work with Sparsholt College Animal Management Centre on improving animal welfare; find solutions for sustaining viable populations of animals and their ecosystems through Marwell Wildlife and links to the global zoo and wider conservation communities.

Sustainable farming practice solutions

Try new solutions at LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming) Demonstration Farms: working, commercial farms practising Integrated Farm Management. LEAF Demonstration Farmers play a critical role in promoting sustainable farming. Work with the Surrey Centre for Environment and Sustainability to analyse and design novel sustainable approaches in agriculture and food production.

Welfare and longevity of companion animals

Due to the strengthening bond between owners and their pets, demands and expectations for companion animal care have increased. Work with the University of Surrey’s School of Veterinary Medicine to create solutions for nutrition and movement in animals to ensure they live long and healthy lives. Work alongside the Surrey Cancer Research Institute and Fitzpatrick Referrals Oncology and Soft Tissue Centre to explore, diagnose, and trial new treatments.

Zoetis/ University of Surrey collaboration in creating vHive - the Veterinary Health Innovation Engine

In 2015 Zoetis, the world’s largest animal pharmaceutical company, and the University of Surrey’s School of Veterinary Medicine collaborated to launch vHive, a unique multi-disciplinary research and innovation initiative, dedicated to the development and adoption of new digital technologies in animal health.

vHive was created through a co-investment of £8.5 million and was supported by an award of £200k from EM3 LEP and co-locates staff from the Zoetis Centre for Digital Innovation, with academics from the School of Veterinary Medicine. The engine additionally benefits from expertise in technology from Surrey’s 5G Innovation Centre and the Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing, along with business insights from the Centre for the Digital Economy in Surrey Business School as well as INDEX (Initiative in the Digital Economy) at University of Exeter.

Amongst its many collaborative achievements, vHive contributed to ALPHA – the African Livestock Productivity and Health Advancement initiative. ALPHA was co-funded by Zoetis and a grant of $14m from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. ALPHA promotes livestock health and positively impacts farmers’ livelihoods by increasing access to quality veterinary medicines and services, diagnostic laboratory networks, and animal health training in sub-Saharan Africa. vHive is also spearheading the development of the DIHAH - the Data innovation Hub for Animal Health enabling collaboration on animal health datasets.

vHive has become a very impactful initiative enabling both organisations to appreciate the myriad of possibilities in the digital era of veterinary medicine.

Boehringer Ingelheim

Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health is the second largest animal health business in the world, with net sales of 4.1 billion euros in 2020 and presence in more than 150 countries. They deliver a large and innovative portfolio of products and services to prevent disease and improve the health and productivity of animals around the world.

Their Animal Health manufacturing site in Pirbright, Surrey, holds the industry’s biggest portfolio of vaccines to help control infectious animal diseases such as foot-and-mouth (FMD) and rabies. They are the leader in the development of antigen banks for many countries around the world.

In 1924, the Government of the UK set up a site in Pirbright dedicated to research on FMD, one of the most devastating diseases of livestock. In 1963, Wellcome was approved to produce FMD vaccines in a newly built factory, leased from the UK Government via The Pirbright Institute. Between 1991 and 2017, the ownership of the site passed through several companies until it became part of Boehringer Ingelheim.
