What is lateral entry?

Lateral

entry is an alternative route to teaching for qualified individuals outside of the public education system.

Lateral

entry allows qualified individuals to obtain a teaching position and begin teaching right away, while obtaining a license as they teach. Only the hiring school system can initiate the process for lateral entry status.

THINGS TO REMEMBER…

* Experience credit must be at least 20 hours per week

* Experience credit must be for at least 6 months

* All experience credit forms must be signed by the previous supervisor.

* Internships and volunteering do not count, must be paid positions.* Experience credit must be directly related to the license area* DPI has the final say on accepting experience credit forms, once we submit to them, they approve or deny the request.Non-Teaching Experience –any relevant non-teaching work experience may be documented by previous employers on a Form NE. *Form NE requires a signed job description on company letterhead. Teaching experience – any teaching experience at the college level, or experience as an instructional Teacher Assistant can be submitted for review.

btaining a Plan of Study After becoming employed as a lateral entry teacher, a plan of study outlining the coursework needed to clear the lateral entry license must be obtained. There are two options: university or the RALC.

University – The teacher must have their transcripts evaluated at a regionally accredited institution that has an approved teacher education program.

RALC – Complete

https://ralc.us/ requesting a plan of studyIn order to clear your Lateral Entry license, you must have either a college or university that has an approved teacher education plan in the licensure area, or the RALC recommend for a clear license.

Testing

If not taken prior to employment, testing requirements for the licensure area, must be met within the three years of lateral entry.

Completion of coursework from the Plan of Study, with each course at a grade C or better, within the three years

Passing all required NCDPI testing within the three years

No extensions granted, three years to complete all requirements
