Philippine Banana Market

Philippine produces world class banana, the country is the 5

th

largest exporter in the world (2016)

Banana is 3

rd

top agricultural export in the Philippines based on FOB value (2015)

Mindanao has the largest area of production and today the Banana export industry is in 15 out of 25 provinces in Mindanao

Fresh Cavendish banana is mainly exported in Gulf countries (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain) and ASEAN countries (Brunei, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and Singapore)

UPL

Worldwide; Farmer First

We exist to ensure more food and nutrition for more people in the world and we do that by putting the Farmer First in everything

we

do.

We provide solutions to optimize farm productivity for farmers through innovative and cost effective products to increase farmers income.

Our farmer engagement initiatives aim to educate, assist and address everyday challenges that farming poses.

“FARMER FIRST Supporting the one who feeds the world”

UPL’s Qualitative Vision on

Mancozeb

products are better in terms of the following

:

Physical-Chemistry

Concentration of the active

Water content

Suspensibility

Particle Size

Dustiness

Stability

Biological

Dispersibility

Rainfastness

/ Persistence

Biological efficiency

Vondozeb

has demonstrated excellent physical properties in terms of

suspensibility

, viscosity,

flowability

and compatibility with other fungicides. There is no risk of sedimentation with the current storage

system.

Vondozeb

formulations offer the best dispersion in the leaves in two ways:

Formulation in oil with excellent diffusion of drops in the leaf

Dry formulation that offers a high number of drops covering 100% of the leaf surface

Rainfastness

– product persistence in the leave is excellent preventing product run off in the leaves

Ricardo Astua(Effect of tank mixing with mancozeb

in the sensitivity of Mycosphaerella fijiensis to single site fungicides)

Slide13

13

Experimental results have confirmed that resistance of

M.fijiensis

to Single Site Fungicides can be delayed using a tank mix with multisite fungicides (

mancozeb

).

On the other hand, the disease control obtained was also better in the treatments that include tank mixture of Single Site Fungicides +

Mancozeb

.

Slide14

14

Effective and economic option for the farmers toolbox

Even with availability of other chemistry, still considered an essential toolNo resistance after 60 yearsHighly compatible with other products

UPL products show good

rainfastness

Quick degradation, safer to environment

Multisite

(Mancozeb and Human Health)

Mancozeb

has a huge database and its toxicological hazards and modes of action are well understood.

It has been reviewed many times in different areas of the world and is currently being re-reviewed in Europe.

Its primary effect is inhibition of thyroid hormone synthesis

.

Rats are the most sensitive and humans the least, to the effects of

mancozeb

/ETU. This is partly due to species differences in metabolism of ETU.

Slide16

16

Rats are the most sensitive and humans the least, to the effects of

mancozeb/ETU. This is partly due to species differences in metabolism of ETU.The effects on thyroid hormones lead to thyroid tumours in rats but not mice, no evidence in humans

.

No evidence of developmental neurotoxicity was seen with

mancozeb

/ETU in rats.

Effects on the thyroid hormonal system in rats do not indicate adverse effects of relevance to man

.

We do not consider

mancozeb

to be an ED according to the WHO/EU definition.

Slide17

17

Regulatory reference values provide large safety factors that are protective of human populations.

Exposure studies indicate that levels of mancozeb/ETU are well below the reference values.

Human studies have not associated

mancozeb

with any health effects.

Mancozeb

is a safe compound when used correctly.
