Common noun

Is the name of a general type of person, place, thing, event or idea.

Most of the nouns we use are common nouns.

These nouns begin with a lower case letter.

Examples:

Proper noun

Is the name of a specific person, place, thing, event or idea.

In writing, proper nouns ALWAYS begin with capital letters.

Specific = to single out something

Example:

Mount Everest

Thanksgiving

Cosmopolitan

Proper nouns: places

The names of parts of the country or world are proper nouns.

WHO CAN NAME ME A COUNTRY IN THE WORLD? A CONTINENT? AN OCEAN? A RIVER? A CITY?

When compass directions are used as nouns, they are common nouns.

Proper nouns: ABBREVIATIONS

An

abbreviation

is a short form of a word.

If the word is a proper noun, you capitalize its abbreviation.
