The Spirit Leads to JesusAugust 28, 2016

It is impossible for the Gospel to be vanquished so long as there remains in the world one soul that is born of God. SpurgeonSlide2

1 John 5:6-12Slide3

1 John 5:6

This is He who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not by the water only but by the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.Slide4

Water and Blood

Water Baptism, the CrossWater Baptism and CommunionSoldier's lance in Jesus’ heartNatural BirthJohn 7:38 – Living waterSlide5

Spurgeon

"A priest was always ordained by sacrificial blood, cleansing water, and oil that spoke of the anointing of the Holy Spirit. So Jesus also had these three witnesses to His priestly ministry." Slide6

Tertullian 155-240 AD

Most likely, John means the water of Jesus' baptism, and the blood of His crucifixion. John 3:5: Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. The being born of water in this passage speaks of the cleansing waters of baptism.Slide7

1 John 5:6

This is He who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not by the water only but by the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.Slide8

1 John 5:7-8

For there are three that testify: the Spirit and the water and the blood; and these three agree.Slide9

1 John 5:7-8 KJV

For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.Slide10

The TrinitySlide11

Trinity

Matthew 28:19 - Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,Slide12

Trinity

2 Corinthians 13:14 - The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.Slide13

Trinity

1 Peter 1:2 - According to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with His blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you.Slide14

Trinity

John 15:26 - But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, Who proceeds from the Father, He will bear witness about Me.Slide15

Trinity

Acts 10:38- You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.Slide16

Trinity

Hebrews 9:14 - how much more will the blood of Christ, Who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.Slide17

Trinity

Luke 3:21-22 - Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heavens were opened, and the Holy Spirit descended on Him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, “You are My beloved Son; with You I am well pleased.”Slide18

Trinity

Luke 1:35 - And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the Child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God.Slide19

Modalism – Jesus Only

This heresy is defined and also called Sabellianism, is the unorthodox belief that God is one person who has revealed Himself in three forms or modes in contrast to the Trinitarian doctrine where God is one being eternally existing in three persons. Slide20

1 John 5:7-8

For there are three that testify: the Spirit and the water and the blood; and these three agree.Slide21

1 John 5:9

If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater, for this is the testimony of God that He has borne concerning His Son.Slide22

Matthew 3:17

and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is My beloved Son, with Whom I am well pleased.”Slide23

Matthew 17:5

He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is My beloved Son, with Whom I am well pleased; listen to Him.”Slide24

1 John 5:9

If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater, for this is the testimony of God that He has borne concerning His Son.Slide25

For Our Consideration

Why is our understanding of the Trinity a hill worth dying upon? Why is it important that Jesus is both fully God and fully man?Water, blood, and Spirit all point back to Jesus – why? How?Do we believe God’s testimony revealed in/about His Word?Slide26
