Patterns with – au, - aw, and - ong These words all have similar patterns, but some have different sounds. Pattern - au - aw - ong - * Spelling words caught bawled belongings brought launch dawn oblong bought fault scrawl strong across lawmakers wrong frost Vocabulary auditorium awkward sought auctioned overdrawn overwrought distraught gnawing exalted If you scored 13 /15 or better on the pretest, study and spell the Vocabulary words. If you scored less than 13/15, study to spell the Spelling words. Assignment 1 Create a semantic map for the words distraught, awkward, and bawled. Assignment 2 Complete the worksheet on the back. Assignment 3 Practice sorting the words into their patterns. Sort the words three times. Then, try to create a new way to sort them. Assignment 4 Illustrate five of the words above. Assignment #2 Understanding Verb Forms Name Verbs are special words. We can change them to show when something happened. Look at what happens with the spelling word gnaw: Present tense The hamster gnaws on his treat. This shows that the action is happening right now. Past tense The hamster gna wed on his treat. This shows that the action started and finished in the past. Present progressive The hamster is gnawing on his treat. This shows that the action is still going on .
