Skimpy: Opening Shot 3 – Further information Skimpy will screen on ABC2 on Monday , 17 November 2014 at 9 .30pm as part of a third series of Opening Shot documentaries from emerging Australian filmmakers . Below are some statements from the film’s Produ cer and C ommissioning E ditor. Statement from Deb Spinocchia, Producer of Skimpy “ As documentarians it is always encouraging when people debate the issues within a film and we always welcome all levels of criticism. In terms of the various concerns abo ut Skimpy which have surfaced well before people have even seen the film, we see this as evidence the film has the potential to unsettle certain viewers. However certain critics are being judgmental without knowing the full story of the film and for us, our approach in making Skimpy was to remain open minded and to avoid judging these women in any way. We crafted Skimpy as a provocative and honest look at a little known career, told through the lives of three young Australian women. T he reason we chose t o investigate this particular job was that we wanted to document the story of these women and the choices they make . In the end we believe Skimpy is an insightful film that offers a new understanding of what is a very challenging job , and that it reveals the complexities of life as a Skimpy without being exploitative or gratuitous in nature. We hope that people will watch the film and find it as insightfu l and entertaining as we do.” Statement from Andrea Ulbrick, Commissioning Editor of Skimpy As the commissioning editor of Skimpy , I am satisfied that the filmmakers have achieved what they set out to do; honestly explore the lives of three women working in a little known nor understood career. Importantly, the documentary provides something we know t hat our ABC2 audience loves – exclusive access to a rarely seen and often confronting world. Documentaries on ABC2 are especially curated for being investigative, raw, risky and provocative and this film is completely in line with these perspectives. Rat her than being gratuitous, we believe that the nudity is as an honest depiction of the work these women do. As I hope you will agree when you watch it, Skimpy is hardly an advertisement for this career choice, and it certainly does portray the downside of the job and the unpleasant behaviour of some of the customers. The majority of the creative team involved in the making of Skimpy was female, women who would never want to associate themselves with anything sleazy or exploitative. Documentaries about se x and sexuality can shine real light onto our world, and this one does just that . Interestingly, in the lead up to the broadcast of one of last year’s Opening Shot film s , The Vagina Diaries , similar concerns about nudity and the exploitation of women wer e raised, yet the film still managed to draw a large and mostly female audience.
