SURI 2021 INFORMATION I. OVERVIEW West Chester University invites applications for our Summer 202 1 Undergraduate Research Institute (SURI). The purpose of SURI is to: • Increase the interest in and opportunities for undergraduate research and creative activity in all disciplines . • Establish a community of undergraduate scholars, where the students develop basic skills in all aspects for conducting researc h and creative activity including project development, research compliance (when appropriate) , and disseminat ion. • Promote critical an d analytical thinking skills that prepare undergraduate students for graduate - level studies and/or careers. Selected applicants will receive a stipend to work full - time ( 37.5 hours/week) along with an additional stipend for subsistence over five weeks during summer 20 21 ( June 1 st through Ju ly 3 rd ) to participate in: • R esearch and creative activity under the direct supervision of a faculty member. • An invited speaker series. • A SURI closin g event during which they will present their work (poster, presentation, or performance). SPECIAL NOTE: Due to the COVID - 1

2 9 pandemic, stu dents who can work and
9 pandemic, stu dents who can work and be mentored remotely will be encouraged to do so. Any students whose research or creative activity requires them to work on campus or at a remote site must acknowledge that they have read and review ed the current Student Community Agreement and Student Code of Conduct as p art of the application process. I I. ELI GIBILITY The applicant must be: • A West Chester University undergraduate student who will remain enrolled at the university through the completion of their project. • Able to work full - time ( 37.5 hours/week) for the program during its five - week duration. III. FUNDING Students who participate in the five - week program will receive a work stipend of $ 2 5 00.00 along with an additional subsistence stipend of $500.00 for a total of $3,000.00 . Students will be expe cted to: • Spend 37.5 hours a week on the project. • Work under the direct supervision o f the faculty mentor. • Participate in periodic research or creative activity - related group sessions and the closing event. • Prepare an oral or a poster presentation , performance, or work of art for the Spring 202

2 WCU Research and Creative Activity Day . • Complete entrance and exit surveys to reflect on their experience a nd assess the impact of SURI. • Submit a final report by August 15, 2021 . Faculty mentors will re ceive 1 credit pay for the five - week program. This is not meant to be a per student payment, therefore this salary will not increase for faculty members who decide to mentor more than one student. IV. SELECTION CRITERIA 18 - 20 applicants will be selected through a competitive review process . Reviewer s will score each application using one of the following rubric s : A. Research Rubric. Attribute 1=Fair 2 = Good 3 = Exceptional Background Disciplinary Context Methodology Potential Outcomes and Implications Written Communication . Academic and Career Goals related to this project Faculty recommendation B. Creative Activity Rubric.
