Roles and responsibilities (training) Donor Centre Manager / team:Line management of the NursesDay to day support and practical exposure to donor centre activitiesPractical application of the theoretical knowledgeTask based and mandatory training completion and recordingDonor Centre contact details including opening hours and phone numbersAED familiarisation for local centreAccess needed for learners to a PC terminal for mandatory training and virtual classroomsFinal signoff of ‘safe to practice’ locally in conjunction with self declaration by NurseRegional Lead Nurses:Virtual classrooms for all theoretical inputUnderpinning background and theoretical basisPoint of remote clinical support and contactLearning queries and supportSignoff of theoretical element and successful completion of scenarios

3. Week 1 Objective – completion of training pathway will enable nurses to operate within the capacity as second nurse in centres, supporting the clinical lead. Does not include clinical decision making in ref to donor selection.Day 1 – Local centre orientation and induction to the centre including roles and responsibilities of the team, mandatory and task based training. Observation of donation screening in preparation for day two. Contact made by Nursing Care Quality Team to arrange virtual classrooms and provide any pre-reading material.Day 2 – AM: local observation and any pre-course preparation. PM: Virtual Classroom: screening theory, Donor Adverse Event recognition and management (SOP 1510 trained out locally). Basic introduction to JPAC.Day 3 – AM: Observe Apheresis procedures. PM: Virtual Classroom: Apheresis familiarisation.Day 4 – Practical guided awareness of session management using modified formative assessment provided post virtual classroom, day two. Day 5 – Consolidation of learning from days 1-4, observation of lead Registered Nurse undertaking clinical decision making use of the appropriate tools.

4. Week 2Objective – completion of training pathway will equip nurses to operate as clinical lead.Day 1 – AM: observation of clinical lead undertaking donor selection process, with focus on taking of discretionary tests and related discussion. Pre-course self directed learning. PM: Virtual Classroom: discretionary testing theory, scenario based learning and further on session observation of screening. Expand on the use of JPAC. Final assessment scenarios issued for completion by end of week.Day 2 – Practical learning, managing screening queries and application of discretionary testing under direct supervision in the donor centre.Day 3 – AM: observation of clinical lead undertaking coding of DHCs for deferrals and adverse events etc and related discussion. Pre-course self directed learning. PM: Virtual Classroom: coding theory, scenario based learning and further on session observation of documentation. Consolidation in the use of JPAC. Introduction and explanation of SMOT.Day 4 – Practical application of managing screening queries and application of coding under direct supervision in the donor centre. Day 5 – On session practice, completion and sign off SMOT.

5. Week 3 onwards - consolidationWork under indirect supervision undertaking Clinical Lead role.RLNs to mark final assessment scenarios. Pass mark required is 100%.Nurses will be asked to sign a self declaration confirming completion of all training elements, this will also be assumed to confirm their ‘safe to practice’ status. This will be countersigned by the Donor Centre Manager.Once all of the above is completed and signed the Nurses are then considered as able to work independently as the Clinical Lead.
