Context

The Little Rock Nine was a group of nine African American high school students, who were one of the first to integrate into Little Rocks all white School who

were recruited by Daisy Bates, president of the Arkansas branch of the NAACP.

As the president of the Montgomery Improvement Association, Martin Luther King wrote to President Dwight D. Eisenhower requesting the nine students to attend Little Rock.

This event was supposed to test a 1954 US supreme court ruling that declared segregation in public schools unconstitutional (Brown Vs Board of Education).

Key events

In September 1957 The Little Rock Nine went to Little Rock Central High School, an angry mob of white people verbally harassed them.

The Governor, Orval Faubus, opposed desegregation and sent 270 soldiers of Arkansas National guard to stop them from going in.

Faubus ignored President Eisenhower which lead Eisenhower to bring in federal troops to protect the Little Rock nine from violent/ crude white mobs

Significance

The main impact that the Little Rock Nine had on civil rights was that the school they had attended/graduated from was an all white school; they had faced major discrimination.

Federal gov. overruled state gov. which faced a lot of criticism and raised questions about the power of federal government

Segregation is wrong

When states ignore/resist federal laws, the president has the power to intervene

Use military force to stop violence against little rock nine

If laws not upheld, there could be anarchy which damages country’s reputation

NO Federal intervention!!!

States should control speed of integration

Plessy v Ferguson (1896), segregation is fine if the facilities are equal

Supreme court can’t make laws, only congress

Perspectives

Daisy Bates, a Civil Rights activist who gathered students that would attend Little Rock High, believed that the children would serve as powerful symbols against segregation

MLK Jr. told President Eisenhower that lack of response from the government would “set the process of integration back 50 years”

Although

Ike

did not agree with court mandated segregation, he felt a constitutional obligation to uphold the ruling

Most Southern whites did not believe in desegregation and integrating schools in the south

The governor of Little Rock, Orval Faubus, believed that activists promoted concern and spread wild rumors to integrate schools at any price

The CCC, an organization that aimed to prevent desegregation, believed that the NAACP was working with Communists to undermine the “Southern way of life”
