Presentation Transcript

1. Geology of Iraq

2. Geology of Iraq regards the main important and advanced subject in relation to other geologic sub – disciplines. The geology of Iraq as a study is closely depended on basic geologic branches, such as tectonics, stratigraphy, sedimentology, petrology, paleontology and structural geology. On the other hand, there are some applied branches in geology directly related to studying geology of Iraq, such as petroleum geology, hydrogeology and economic geology. To understanding the geology of Iraq, we must return to tectonic and dipositional history in a regional scale of the entire depositional basis which developed in the Arabian Plate throughout the Phanerozoic time, because of geologically the Iraqi territory compose northeastern portion of the Arabian Plate. Introduction

3. Main Objective of the Course1- Describes the Late Precambrian development of the Arabian Plate.2- Understanding the tectonic fabric and tectonic evolution of the Iraq.3- Describing depositional and tectonic evolution of the Arabian Plate during Phanerozoic time with emphasis on the evolution of Tethyan plate margin that strongly influenced intraplate basin development in Iraq.

4. 4- Describes the Early to Late Paleozoic “Caledonian to Hercynian” arching event that where controlled by active margin development along the south margin of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean.5- Describes the opening of the Neo-Tethys Ocean in the Late Permian time and the formation passive margin along the NE edge of the Arabian Plate and subsequent opening of the narrow ocean (southern Neo-Tethys) in the Late Tithonian to Cenomanian time with the splitting off from the Arabian Plate of a narrow microcontinent .6- Describes the Late Cretaceous obduction of Neo-Tethys Oceanic crust on to the NE and N margin of the plate with formation of foredeep basin.

5. 7- Finally the closure of the Neo-Tethys and the continental collision of the Arabian Plate with the Turkish and Iranian plates are discussed.8- Describing the formations in detail using new stratigraphic divisions.9- The Quaternary sediment of Megasequence AP11, which very important for agriculture and human activities are discussed separately.
