19. GlossaryInterphase: It is a period of preparation for cell division. This phase can be further subdivided into G1, S and G2. In G1 phase, cell grows. In S phase DNA replication occurs and G2 phase is the period of cytoplasmic growth.Karyokinesis: Division of nuclear materials.Cytokinesis: Division of cytoplasm.Mitosis: In this process cell division completed in four sub phases: prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase. In prophase all cell organelles (except mitochondria and plastid) as well as nuclear membrane disappear and again all organelles reappear in the telophase.Prophase I: It is a subphase of meiosis I. It is further subdivided into-leptotene, zygotene, pachytene, diplotene, diakinesis.Synaptonemal complex is that structure of homologous chromosome where crossing over takes place and recombination occurs by recombinase enzyme. It occurs in prophase I (pachytene stage).Recombination: A process by which portions of DNA is exchanged between the homologous chromosomes in the synaptonemal complex.

20. Mention different sub-stages of prophase-I of meiosis.Mention the significance of cell cycle.Give the sequence of events occurrs during prophase of mitosis. Give the key features of meiosis. Differentiate between Meiosis-I and meiosis-II. Comment on the statement “Meiosis enables the conservation of specific chromosome number of each species even though the process actually results in reduction of chromosome number.” How does cytokinesis in plant cells differ from that in the animal cells?State the structure of tetrad.State the importance of mitosis.Let’s revise
