Pine Tree ISD Nursing Procedure January 2020 Bed Bug / Flea Procedure Actual bed bug or flea infestations in school / classrooms are uncommon. More commonly, a few bugs will be found on student clothing or backpack from an infested home. Things to Avoid: ● Overreacting - a sighting does not mean an infestation. ● Closing school - there is usually no need to close the school or send students home. ● Stigmatizing or excluding students who you suspect may have brought bugs to school. When a bug is found on a stude nt: ● The student should be discreetly removed ( with belongings) from the classroom to the campus nurse office or the campus principal office. ● Any bugs should be removed and collected for identification. ● If confirmed bed bug or flea was found on a student; that student’s parent or guardian will be contacted. ● Students should not be excluded from school. Schools should not be closed due to bug presence. ● Student should return to class as soon as bugs are removed.

● Student’s belongings ( coat, backpack etc ) will be kept in a closed plastic container to avoid spread until controlled. Classroom Inspection / Elimination: ● DO NOT allow untrained staff to apply pesticides on school property. ● Alert Pine Tree Facility Services and campus custodians of the situation for pest control measures. ● Backpacks, lunchboxes, coats and other items that travel back and forth to school from home can be inspected daily and sealed in closed plastic container to prevent spread. ● Hard surfaces can be cleaned with standard products, classr oom maybe vacuumed multiple times, any soft items ( pillows, blackets, Pine Tree ISD Nursing Procedure January 2020 stuffed animals) MUST be removed from the classroom.
