INTRODUCTION

Capital letters are a useful signal for a reader. One of the first things we learn in English are capital letters. When and how to correctly use capital letters in

written English communication is a difficult problem, especially with primary kids.One of the most common errors in written communication is

the misuse of capital letters (upper case letters). Students tend to use capital letters for everything that feels important to them

.

Through this presentation, we will try to guide you with the important rules and provide examples of when to use capital letters in English writing.

CAPITAL LETTER-Rules & Examples:

1.We

should always start the sentence with a capital letter. a. You

have to always use a capital letter after a full stop,

b. If

the previous sentence ends with a question mark(?) or exclamation mark(!),they are like full stops and indicate the end of the

sentence. Hence, capital letters need to be used after an exclamation or a question mark.Examples : India is a great country.Taj Mahal is a historical monument.Rohit is a boy. He is a good student.Wow ! What a beautiful house.Which are your favorite colors ? Can you name them.

2.For Proper Nouns

A proper noun

is anything that is the name of a particular person, place, animal or thing. They always start with a capital letter.Examples :

Manju

is a gentle girl

Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of India.Eiffel Tower is in France.

3.Names of

the days of the week and months of the year are written in capital letters.

Examples :December and January are very cold months of the year.

We will go for a picnic on

Sunday

4.The names

of mountains, mountain peaks, rivers, and seas are written in capital letters

Examples : Mount Everest is the highest mountain top in the world.

The

Ganga

is a holy river of India.

The Himalayas is a famous mountain range.The Pacific Ocean is very big.

5.Capital letter is used when writing the titles like

Mr., Mrs., Dr., etc.

Examples : Dr.Malhotra

is a heart specialist.

Mr.

and Mrs.Gupta went to market.Both Mr. and Mrs.Kapoor are doctors.

6.Capital

letter is used when writing the names of

religions, religious communities and religious books.Examples :

The

Hindus

worship so many gods and

goddesses.

The Christians celebrate Christmas with great love and enthusiasm. The Gita is a great holy book.

7.Capital letter is used when writing the

name of festivals ,name of languages & subjects.

Examples : Diwali is a festival of lights.

Eid

8. Writing the letter ‘I

’ when it refers to the first person pronoun.
