FAQs Core AbilitiesWhat are Core Abilities?They are broadbased general education outcomes that will prepare a student to pursue his/her chosen profession or field of study and to develop themselves as courses align with one or more of the Core Ability outcome. In other words, they address the same skill within the context of a specific discipline. The course outcomes have been mapped for alignment with the Core Ability outcomes.The courses whose learning outcomes hasignificant alignment with the Core Abilities outcomes are on the list.What do you mean by “significant alignment”?Courses that have course outcomes that align with either or both Communication Outcome 1 and 3 fulfill the requirement for that Core Ability.Courses that have course outcomes that align with either or both Thinking Outcome 1 and 2 fulfill the requirement for that Core Ability.Courses that have course outcomes that align with a

here are statewide Skill Areas Requirements: Written Communication Skills and SymbolicQuantitative Skills. These substitute for the Communication (written skills) Core Ability and the Thinking (quantitative reasoning) Core Ability. Students need to take 2 courses to meet the Written Skills Requirement for the AA or AS degreeand 1 course to meet the Symbolic/Quantitative Skills Requirement for the AA or AS degree Students who are working toward associate transfer degrees already have to take distribution requirement courses. Will they have to take extra courses to meet the Core Abilities graduation requirement?In most cases, they will have to take no extra coursesor at the most, one or two. Many of the courses on the Fulfillmentof Core Abilities Graduation Requirement list are also on the Distribution Requirements list. The same course may be used to meet both the Core Ability and the Distribution requirement
