Computer Use Guidelines for National Essay ContestInformation Sheet for Contestants1. Essay contestants will have the option to use the standard Blue [Green] book for ahandwritten essay or use their own personal laptop computer and word processingsoftware to compose their essay for this contest.2. Essay contestants who use their own laptop computers and word processing software areexpected to have their computers fully charged for the 2-hour duration of the contest,with no expectation that the facility will have sufficient power outlets to accommodatepower requirements of any or all computers in use during the contest.3. Laptop computers with installed word processing software may be provided by the locallodge or brought by the contestant. However, there is no expectation that there will besufficient laptop computers available at any of the local lodge contest locations. Use ofthe blue book will always be the default choice.4. During the contest, the following restrictions apply:(a) Contestants may not access the internet or other networks.(b) Contestants may not access any information or data that may already reside in the computer they are using.(c) Contestants may not attempt to access ot

her computers or electronic devices.(d)
her computers or electronic devices.(d) Contestants may use auto-correct, word count and spell check, but cannot use the thesaurus, synonym, or look-up features of their word processing software.(e) Contestants may not introduce or input external information or data (i.e., CD- ROM, DVD-ROM, Blue-Ray, flash memory, etc.) into the computer used for the essay contest other than via keyboard or mouse.(f) Contestants may not use speech to text translation methods for entry. It is expected that contestants will maintain a respectful, quiet manner during the contest.5. Contestants using computers are limited to 90 minutes to compose their essays. Bluebook users will have the full 2 hours to complete and submit their essay.6. Contestants shall name and save their files in the Documents folder using either:Lastname_Firstname_Middlename.docx, Lastname_Firstname_Middlename.doc, orLastname_Firstname_Middlename.txt. Contestants are highly encouraged to save theirdocument when they begin their essay composition and save frequently thereafter.7. Upon completion of their essay, Contestants shall do a final save, signal to the Proctorand the Proctor shall download the contestant’s essay to the Proctor’s flash thumb andstore their essay in the “Lodge Name Contest” folde
