Instructions for Compl eting APUSH Timeline Notes: Very Important People & Events (VIPEs)  Each month you will receive a calendar. Read the pages listed on the calendar before the due date. The reading assignment is intended to be completed by the beginning of class on the date indicated.  As you read, complete the Timeline Notes VIPEs from the assigned section of the chapter. For each VIPE there are 2 components: o (1) describe /define the VIPE (the definition cannot include the term itself) o (2) ACE: A pply or C onnect the VIPE to something that is relevant to other events, people, places, etc., or to some other period in history, or Explain why the VIPE is relevant in US History, or provide an E xample of the VIPE . If any relevant picture/symbols/ etc. come to mind add those too   Some of t he VIPEs you will identify & ACE are in bold in the textbook reading, but all are included in the text of the assigned pages. Even if the VIPE is in bold, you will need to read to ascertain context to go beyond a simple definition.  VIPEs for each assignment are listed on the monthly ca lendar . If you aren’t clear on which VIPE s to define and turn in on a particular day , please consult the calendar. If you still are n’t sure after consulting the calendar , then ask Ms. Justice   ACE - ing VIPEs will require more than a few words – often more than one sentence – to demonstrate full understanding. Avoid minimalist effort . VIPEs will serve as historical evidence for in - clas s discussions and historical writing responses and essays. The purpose is to not only know facts, but understand and connect them to relevant historical issues, concepts, and developments over time.  VIPEs must be hand - written .  While group discussion & bra instorming is great, VIPEs must be done individually . If you have the same definition & ACE as another student, neither of you will receive credit and both of you will receive a discipline referral for plagiarism. ( U ltimately all written work must be in yo ur own words ! This also includes not copying someone else’s information from the internet. )  Two to three days a week your entry task will be to turn in your VIPEs and take a Reading Quiz that will largely be related to the VIPEs you identified & ACE - d as you read.  VIPEs will be checked for completion and put in the gradebook as a Skills for Success grade. As material related to VIPEs is covered in class it is your responsibility to ensure that you have assessed the facts and significance of each VIPE corre ctly. Feedback on Reading Quizzes will also assist with this . If you need additional assistance, please take advantage of SST on Mondays, Thursday, and Fridays.  To be considered on time , VIPEs must be submitted at the beginning of class, before the Readin g Quiz begins, on the day they are due. Any VIPEs submitted after that, will be considered late (10% late - work penalty).  The AP US History Exam in May is based in knowledge of fundamental US History concepts , so being familiar with the definitions of the VIPE s – as well as applications & examples - will be important!
