1 CANON OF PROPORTIONS IN EGYPTIAN RTCOMMO
CANON OF PROPORTIONS IN EGYPTIAN RTCOMMON CORE STANDARDCCSS.Math.Practice.MPReason abstractly and quantitativelyCCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MPLook for and make use of structure.VERVIEWBy following stylized principles, Egyptians created an idealized human form that was pleasing to the eye and reected a sense of order, even if it was not realistic. This resulted in art that is readily identiable throughout a span of more than years. In this lesson, students will examine and attempt to discern the rules that Egyptian artists employed, both Copies of Samples of Egyptian ArtCopies of Determining Mathematical ProportionsRuler centimeters and inchesTape MeasureWorksheet. Additional Ask students how we know that the art that they are lookin at is from Eypt. Explain that since Eyptians developed a set of standards for the depiction of the human form, we can easily reconize artwork as Eyptian. Ask them to come up with some of the similarities betwee

n the artworks to create a list of “rules” for Eyptian art. Direct students to examine how each section of the body is depicted. For example, the feet are shown in prole while the upper body is shown facin forward. Students may come up with this list individually, in pairs, or as a whole class. To create the proportions of human form in artwork, Eyptians used the canon of proportions, or a set of uidelines, to ive order to their art. This system was based on a rid of squares hih includin one square from the hairline to the top of the head, usually hidden under a crown. These proportions were not just a way to scale ures larer or smaller; Eyptians used this rid to correctly represent ideal proportions of the human ure. Usin the directions on Part One of the Worksheet, students should create a rid composed of squares measurin cm x cm and nd measurements for

NOTE: Teachers may suest that students measure twice to ensure straihter lines see answer key.Usin a combination of a ruler and the rid, students should nd measurements for the lenth of various body parts listed on the worksheet. They may estimate to the closest centimeter / block. For Part Two of the Worksheet, students should use the information from Part One to create a rid. First, students must determine the scale. Teachers may lead a discussion to help students ure this step out. The easiest way to accomplish this is to remember that the heiht of the entire body is units. By measurin the total body from the feet to the top of the head, students can divide by to nd a scale of . inches. Students should then create a rid and measure the Eyptian ure as in the previous step. For Part Three of the Worksheet, students should work in roup

Is the sense of idealized human form as rigid as the Egyptian canon of proportions? Types of art could include Greek, Roman, medieval, or modern art.Research the symbolism of color in Egyptian art.
