Consciousness
: our level of
awareness about ourselves and the environment.Your awareness of external eventsYour awareness of internal sensationsYour awareness of yourself as a unique being having these experiencesYour awareness of your thoughts about these experiencesThe movie in your headSlide2
Conscious Level
: What you are currently aware of, including yourself & environment.
Nonconscious
Level: Body processes controlled by your mind; usually NOT aware: Heartbeat, respiration, digestion, etc. Preconscious Level: Information about yourself & environment that you are NOT currently thinking about, but could be. (You aren’t currently thinking about your favorite toy as a child, but if asked about it, you would be.)Subconscious Level: Information we are not currently aware of, but we know must exist due to behavior.
(Great example: Mere Exposure Effect - when we prefer stimuli we have seen before over novel/new stimuli, even if we do not consciously remember seeing the old stimuli.)
Unconscious Level: Psychoanalytic psychologists believe some events & feelings are unacceptable to our conscious mind & are repressed. (Many psychologists object to this concept; difficult or impossible to prove)

Unconsciousness: Lack of ones awareness of what is going on around youExamples: Sleep, dreams, coma, head trauma, anesthesia, deathLearning Target: I will be able to describe what consciousness isSlide4

Sleep Hypnosis Chemically Altered States State Of Consciousness That Are Possible For The Human MindSlide7
Interaction in which one person responds to another person’s suggestions that certain perceptions, feelings, thoughts, or behaviors will spontaneously occurSlide8
Frequently Asked Questions about Hypnosis
Can anyone experience hypnosis? We are all open to suggestion. Can hypnosis enhance recall of forgotten events? No
Can hypnosis force people to act against their will? It can’t make you do something you don’t want to
Post hypnotic suggestion – a suggestion made to a subject to be carried out after the subject is no longer hypnotized Slide9
Can hypnosis be therapeutic
? Post hypnotic suggestions help alleviate headaches, asthma and stress related skin disorders. Can hypnosis relieve pain? Yes
Olivia Munn and Working OutSlide10
Dissociation is a split in consciousness which allows some thoughts and behaviors to occur simultaneously
e.g. hypnosis can dissociate the sensation of pain in ice water, but can still feel the coldSlide11Slide12
Circadian Rhythm
24
HOUR
biological clockBody temp & awareness changesBest to take a test or study during your circadian peaksCan the circadian rhythm explain jet lag?
Circadian:
24 hr biological processes; may be interrupted by exposure to light
Resets biological clock
by affecting suprachiasmatic nucleus
(SCN) &
pineal gland
which secretes
melatonin
.
Jet lag & shift work
can also knock circadian rhythms out of sync. Slide13Slide14
Which direction is the most difficult?
Blue
: Visiting team flies east, wins 37% of games
Purple: Visiting team does not travel, wins 46% of gamesRed: Visiting team flies west, wins 44% of gamesMajor League Baseball Teams & Winning percentages due to flights. Slide15
NREM 1 Stage
Falling to sleep
- transition
stagePulse slows, muscles relax, breathing irregularLasts up to 5 minutesConsists mostly of theta waves that are high amplitude & low frequency
B
rief periods of alpha waves, similar to those present while awake
Hallucinations (false
sensory experiences) can occur &
feeling of falling.
Alpha Waves – the relatively slow brain waves of a relaxed, awake stateSlide16
NREM 2
F
ollows Stage 1 sleep
and is the "baseline" of sleep. Eyes roll slowly from side to sidePart of the 90 minute cycle & occupies approximately 45-60% of sleep. Brain waves slow down
dramatically.
Deeper stage of sleep. Sleep spindles (burst of neural activity) occur here
Not
easy to wake up.Slide17
Stage characterized
by Delta waves or
"slow
wave" sleep because brain activity slows down dramatically. This is a very deep sleepSleepwalking or wetting the bed occurs in this stageIt has restorative effects on our ability to function during waking hours
NREM –
3 Delta WavesSlide18
Stage 5: REM
REM
:
Rapid Eye MovementThis is a very active stage of sleep. Composes 20-25 % of a normal nights sleep.
Breathing, heart rate and brain wave activity quicken
. Vivid Dreams can occur.
Causes a decrease in muscle tone & control, yet active brain… hence PARADOXICALparalyzed

Effects of Sleep Loss
Sleep deprivation= Difficulty studying, diminished productivity, tendency to make mistakes, etc.Can make you fatterGhrelin, leptin
CortisolSuppress immune system
AgingAccidents Slide23Slide24
Calculate Sleep Debt
Allowed to sleep unhindered, most adults will sleep at least 9 hours a nightWith that much sleep, we awake refreshed, sustain better moods, and perform more efficient and accurate work“The brain keeps an accurate count of sleep debt for at least two weeksWith our body yearning for sleep, we will begin to feel terrible. Slide25
23% of individuals have fallen asleep while driving 59% of train engineers have fallen asleep on duty
Airline pilots fall asleep in the cockpit (while flying) an average of 32 times per month (1986 study)Nuclear disasters at Three Mile Island & Chernobyl, Crash of Exxon Valdez all blamed on part in lack of sleepEstimation - accidents due to sleep deprivation cost the U.S. economy:
$56 billion per year52 million work days per year
24,000 deaths per year (Coren, 1996)Sleep DeprivationSlide26
Tips to sleep easier1) Don't engage in mentally stimulating activities prior to bedtime.
2) Keep your bedroom as dark as possible - this helps regulate the hormone responsible for sleeping and waking.3) Keep pets out of the bedroom.4) Eat a light snack before bed, preferably one with protein.5) Exercise daily.6) Keep a regular schedule of sleeping and waking.
7) Avoid caffeine and alcohol, especially within 6 hours of bedtime.8) Don't take naps during the day.
9) Quit drinking fluids 2 hours before bedtime to reduce your chance of having to get up to go to the bathroom.Slide27

Exploring the Dream World
Lucid DreamsDreams in which the individual knows they are dreaming & feel as though they are consciousSome even say they can control the action in these dreams (scriptwriter)
Can we induce a lucid dream? This website seems to think so. Follow their directions and see if you can make one happen for you!
