Job Description Primary Location: Austria-Vienna-Vienna-IAEA HeadquartersJob Posting: Mar 24, 2015Closing Date: May 8, 2015 Organizational Setting The Department of Management (MT) provides a 'platform of services' that serves as a foundation for the successful delivery of the IAEA's scientificand technical programmes. Its mission statement is as follows: "MT is a partner and a business enabler that champions change and efficiency,leveraging a common purpose". Thus, among other support activities, it assists a scientific manager in recruiting the right expert, helps a technicalofficer coordinate the purchase of radiation equipment, and ensures that all Board documents are translated and distributed on a timely basis toMember States.One of the main functions assigned to the IAEA by its Statute is to foster the exchange of scientific and technical information and the dissemination ofknowledge in the nuclear field among Member States. To facilitate the effective exchange and dissemination of information relevant to the IAEA's workand mandate, the Division of Conference and Document Services coordinates and supports the implementation of these activities for its users andclients, both internal and external, by organizing meetings and conferences, issuing documents in the six official IAEA languages, i.e. Arabic, Chinese,English, French, Russian and Spanish, and editing, printing and distributing publications.The French Translation Section is one of six translation sections in the Division providing translations of a broad range of documents and publicationsinto the official languages. It is responsible for translating documents into French. High quality translations For a P-3 Translator: Role The Translator provides accurate, timely and stylistically appropriate translations of texts written mainly in English. The incumbent's translations arenormally checked by a reviser before being finalized for distribution to Member States and/or members of the Secretariat. Partnerships The Translator establishes contacts with terminology and reference staff to elucidate difficulties arising from texts submitted for translation andsometimes with other specialist staff elsewhere in the IAEA to discuss the most suitable translation of a term. Functions / Key Results Expected To translate, mainly from English into French, a broad range of administrative, legal, scientific and technical texts and to ensure that translationsare equivalent in meaning and style to the original texts. To research points of terminology, language and subject matter to assist in the development of the central terminology database and referencearchive. To perform any other duties normally carried out by the members of a translation section in an international organization. For a P-4 Reviser: Role The Reviser provides accurate, timely and stylistically appropriate revisions and translations of texts written mainly in English for distribution to Member Welcome. Functions / Key Results Expected Revise the translations done by other members of the Section, mainly from English into French, covering a broad range of scientific, technical,administrative and legal subjects, ensuring that translations are equivalent in meaning and style to the original texts. Translate and self-revise such texts, especially those of an urgent or confidential nature. Research points of terminology, language and subject matter and assist in the development of the central terminology database and referencearchive. Provide training and guidance to translators as necessary and deputize for the Section Head when required. For both P-3 Translator & P-4 Reviser: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Clear and concise style; broad general knowledge; demonstrated aptitude for technical and general translation work. Some knowledge of scientific and technical subjects, particularly in the nuclear field, and the ability (not necessarily with a formal scientificbackground) to grasp scientific problems and handle difficult technical material. Familiarity with the IAEA and its operations would be regarded as an asset. Ability to train and provide guidance to translators. Ability to interact effectively with internal and external counterparts. Ability to work under pressure, using the latest technology and methods, while maintaining high levels of production and quality. Skill and initiative in researching points of terminology, language and subject matter. Team player: ability to easily integrate in a team and contribute to a positive work environment, especially during periods of intense workload. Sensitivity in handling confidential or proprietary information. Results-oriented approach and knowledge of current trends and practices in translation and revision. Education, Experience and Language Skills University degree in languages or in a technical or scientific field. French as mother tongue or principal language of education, with a profound knowledge of its grammar, style and usage. Very thorough knowledge of English is essential. Knowledge of at least one other official IAEA language (Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Spanish)would be an advantage. Knowledge and experience in using Microsoft Office software and translation support tools, in particular SDL Studio and SDL Multiterm. P-3 Translator: A minimum of five years of relevant working experience in translating scientific and technical texts into French. P-4 Reviser: A minimum of seven years of relevant experience, of which at least four should have been with an international organization, publicsector or non-profit organization or equivalent. Experience in supervising small teams of translators would be an asset.
