Let’s review what we know about Density… 5 Facts About Density Video 2
Life Vest Challenge Design and construct a personal flotation device that can keep a can of soup afloat for at least 60 seconds. 3
Constraints: Device must be in one attached piece Some portion of the can must touch the water Device must attach in less than 20 seconds You may only test your prototype 3 times before presenting. 4
Possible Materials: Paper cups Straws Rubber bands Paper clips Tape Balloons Plastic baggies Glue Foil Corks Foam pieces String Hose Small containers Any other items approved by management 5
Life Vest Challenge Work through your engineering design process lab sheet. Don’t forget your teacher checks!!! 6
Life Vest Challenge Presentations Prepare a 6 slide presentation to share your design challenge with the class. 7
Life Vest Challenge Presentations Slide 1should include: Title of challenge Team name Team members Picture of final design 8
Cardboard Chair Presentation Team Go With It: Rashanna Freeman, Brett Strittmatter , Dee Thompson 9
Life Vest Challenge Presentations Slide 2 should include: Restating of design challenge Restating of requirements and constraints 10
Design a chair constructed of corrugated cardboard that can support a 200-lb person. m ay not use glue or tape to fasten any component of your chair together. M ay use tape as a temporary support, but all of this material must be removed when the final evaluation begins. M ay use other materials as fasteners (i.e. hardware) but they must be approved by the instructor. Cardboard Chair Challenge 11
Life Vest Challenge Presentations Slide 3 should include: Pictures of 3 sketches Reasons why you chose your design 12
Cardboard Chair Challenge We chose this design because we thought the triangular base would support the 200 pound weight. We chose this design because we thought the lounging design would provide more comfort. 13
Life Vest Challenge Presentations Slide 4 should include: Sketch of the design you test List of modifications you made during trials 14
Cardboard Chair Challenge We chose this design because we thought the triangular base would support th 200 pound weight. We chose this design because we thought the lounging design would provide more comfort. 15
Life Vest Challenge Presentations Slide 5 should include: Results Video of your final test 16
Cardboard Chair Challenge Our chair easily held the weight of the instructor, The back piece did bend, still provided some support. 17
Life Vest Challenge Presentations Slide 6 should include: Thoughts from your team reflections What things went well during challenge Struggles and how your faced them Changes you would make next time 18
Cardboard Chair Challenge Our team really struggles during the design phase. We had a hard time converting our measurements to 1/10 th scale. WE also struggled to build our scale model. Upon reflection, we found that these struggles made our construction phase go much smoother. We had worked out many problems we would have faced during the design phase. After reflecting, our team would make the following changes to our design: Make base 1.5 feet tall instead of 2 feet tall. Provide more support in the back piece. 19
