Northeast Service Unit Overview for January NESU Highlights for the Month Customer Comments 01/08/2019: "I absolutely love coming to the library. You are all the sweetest people!" 01/13/2019: Customer told a staff member that he has kept track of every book he has read since the 1980’s. The staff member commented that the customercould be a poster child for the Library. Activities to support The Library Experience Programming and Events Cookie MouseFamily Night NESU Librarian Karrie Simpson reported, “On Monday, January 7thwe hosted a Cookie MouseFamily Night[at Anderson Branch Library]. We had crafts, games, cookie decoration stationand, of course, the Cookie Mouse. Eight of our TAB [Teen Advisory Board] members helped with the event, running stations Lincoln Symphony Orchestra “We were supposed to have Tim Marrone with the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra [at Anderson Branch Library] on January ,” noted Karrie Simpson. “But due to snow in Chicago, he was not ableto fly in to Lincoln in time, and theevent was cancelled.”Technology Assistance with Hoopla and Libby During an extensive phone calllasting nearly 40 minutes, NESU Manager Kim New Exterior Book Return Since a hitandrun accident in early December 2018 in theBethany Branch Library parking lotthat facilityhas been without an exterior return receptacle. There were many, many inquiries from customers asking,“Where did thebook drop go?”, “Will you get a new book drop?”, and “Did they take away the book drop because Bethany Branch is going to UPCO Annual Meeting NESU ManagerKim Shelley represented Lincoln City Libraries at the annual meeting of the University Place Community Northeast Citizens’ Meeting NESU Manager Kim Shelley attended the monthly Northeast Citizens’ Meeting hosted by City Councilwoman (and currentMayoral candidate) Cyndi Lamm. The guest speaker was Tim Byrne, Engineering Services Manager with the Transportation & Utilities Department of Lincoln. Mr. Byrne did an excellent job explaining how Lincoln’s city streets are maintained during inclement winter weather. The variety of factors considered and the technology being used by the Department to determine how best to treat roadways

Most notable to Kim was that blades used for snow removal need to be replaced after approximately 4 “weather events,” at a cost of around $800 per blade.Collaboration Promotion ofChildren’s Dental Health MonthFebruary On January 25, representatives from the Lincoln/Lancaster County Health Department filmed a short segment at the Anderson Branch Library. The segment will be used to inform citizens about Children’s Dental Health Month in February about the special storytimes that will take place at some Lincoln City Libraries’ locations. NESU Librarian Karrie Simpson informed coworkers, “I want you all to be aware that we are having a couple of special storytimes in honor of Children’s Dental Health Month in February. The Lincoln/Lancaster County Health Department coming to hand out free toothbrushes and goodies to storytime families. They will stay 10a.m. each morning, and all patrons can pick up free goods. Also, a pediatric dentist will talk to storytime attendees about the dentist. These storytimes willke place at Anderson Branch on February 6and at Bethany Branch on February 7.” Areas of Excellence/Focus Early Childhood Library Learning Times In conjunction with the Winter Reading Program, Anderson Branch Library hosted a special character ToddlerTime session on January 7. Linda Vollenweider noted, “We started off with the book If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. The person in the Cookie Mousecostume was the hit of the show!” Unfortunately, library learning time sessions during January faced some challenges from Mother Nature. Karrie Simpson commented, Two different Lincoln Public Schools [LPS]closures and extremely cold weather days kept attendance at most of our library learning times down. Except for Bethany’s Storytimes arently nothing keeps them away!”Additional Areas All Students Brownell Elementary School Night NESU Librarian Karrie Simpson reported, “We had a Brownell School Night on January 25th. Sixtyone people attended.The school brought some craftst chocolate. The library provided cookies, a scavenger hunt, door prize drawings, and free books to take home.” Teen Advisory Board Cookie Mouse Family Night As noted above, 8 m

embers of the Anderson Branch Teen Advisory Board [TAB] assisted with theCookie MouseFamily Night on January 7.TAB members oversaw a variety of activity stations located throughout Anderson Branch Library. Activities included decorating cookies, cookie toss (Frisbee) through the Mouse’s mouth, Cookie Mouse flannel board, and voting for your favorite cookie. Votes for Peanut Butter and for Chocolate Chip were pretty much neckneck most of the evening. Teen Advisory Board Mixer “The annual TAB mixer was scheduled for January 18that Bennett Martin, but was cancelled due to bad weather,” reported NESU Librarian Karrie Simpson. It will be rescheduled this spring.”Building up the Culture of LincolnReading One Book, One Lincoln Nominations for the 2019 One Book, One Lincolnprogram were accepted this month.Arts and Music Tuesday Night Tryit: Bellyancing On January 15, Marié Murray hosted the first Tuesday Night Tryit session of the year at Anderson Branch Library. Thirteen teens and adults learned the basics of belly dancing. The class was taught by Cheryl Siedband and Paige Roswell of Jewel in the LotusDance CompanyTen of the participants completed the event evaluation form. Eight of the 10 said that they had never before participated in a belly dancing class. 9 of the 10 said this is an activity that they might like to do again in the future.One attendee commented, “I really enjoyed the class. Thanks.” Another wrote, “It was great.” A third person noted, “The girls [the presenters] were AMAZING!”2f)Services to our Aging Population Bethany BooksTalk Now in its sixteenth year of existence, the BooksTalk program at Bethany Branch Library continues to thrive. Attendance at this weekly book discussion group is comprised mostly of seniors/retirees. In January, 2of the 4 sessions were facilitated by members of the NESU staff. Karrie Simpson commented,“Steph [Eischeid] and I did our annual booktalk this year on January 11thto celebrate both of our birthdays.” Linda Vollenweider noted, I did a book talk ouary 19th at Bethany Branch. I talked about my adventures in China while doing a slide show presentation.I also served Chinese tea. The group seemed to enjoy my travelogue.
