When we get to some “real” cataloging later today you can use any of the four recording methods appropriate to the element you are recording:Unstructured descriptionStructured descriptionIdentifierIRI

Note, however, that the last three, if available, are better for machine processing.

Representative expressionEntity-relationship principles require strict boundaries between the entities in terms of the attributes that can be used to describe them

But people don’t necessarily think of the bibliographical universe in these termsIn particular, database users often associate attributes of expression with worksCataloging with RDA 2 - What's new? - ULA, 15 May 2019

Slide23

Representative expression

Under current RDA it is inappropriate to include language or content type in a description (a.k.a. authority record) for a work and under the 2020 text it will be inappropriate to record intended audience because none of these is (or will be) an element that can be used to describe a work entity:046 __ ǂk 1865 ǂ2

Treatment of aggregates

A manifestation that embodies two or more expressionsMay be expressions of one or more worksThree types of aggregate manifestationsCollection aggregateA manifestation that embodies two or more independent works [e.g. a collection of poetry]Augmentation aggregateA manifestation that embodies two or more works where one is supplemented by the other(s) [e.g. a text with illustrations]

Parallel aggregateA manifestation that embodies two or more expressions of a single work [e.g. a text with parallel translation]

Slide30

Treatment of aggregatesAggregating work

A plan to select and arrange two or more expressions and embody them in a single manifestation“An aggregating work is realized by one and only one aggregating expression”Informally called the “WE lock”—an aggregating work can have only one expressionThe aggregating expression might have more than one manifestation, except …

30

Slide31

Diachronic works, which are usually aggregates

Two kinds of works in RDA: static and diachronicA diachronic work is “A work that is planned to be embodied over time, rather than as a single ‘act of publication’ … the content of the work changes over time.”The plan for change of content is called “extension of content” in RDAaccumulation = addition of content in discrete unitsreplacement = new content integrated with or replacing existing content

Slide32

Diachronic worksNew element for the work entity: Extension plan

Diachronic worksSo what?

Here’s the important change:A diachronic work is realized by one and only one expression and embodied by one and only one manifestationThis is being referred to as the “WEM lock”Result:A diachronic work that changes (e.g. is issued both in print and online; or is translated into a different language) is considered in the 2020 RDA to be a new work, not a new expression as in current RDAImplications for number of records; authorized access points, etc.

Short excursus on linked dataRDF

Linked data is a term used to describe a widely-used framework that links data from different data sources on the Web. This framework is called Resource Description Framework or RDF.RDF is usually written in XML, and is designed to be understood by computers. It is not designed to be displayed to people. But:RDF triples are a translation of the XML that is comprehensible to humans. Linked data consists of a series of triples, many of which may be needed to fully describe a particular entity.

New vocabulary for what we have in the past called “records”, e.g., “authority records for persons”, etc.RDA Glossary definition: One or more metadata statements that describe and relate individual instances of one or more RDA entities.A.k.a. a set of RDF triples that when combined describe an entityExamples in the Toolkit labeled “View in Context Example” are metadata description sets

Metadata work and Data provenance

Metadata workA work that is a metadata statement or a metadata description set.As a work, a metadata work can have any of the elements of any other work, and these elements can be recorded—this is data provenance

.A creator (e.g. the cataloger who composed the metadata statement or description set)A date of work (when the metadata were created)

A language and script of description

A timespan for its validity

Etc.

Data provenance

can be recorded for individual metadata statements or for an entire metadata description set, or both.
