Organic, GMO’s and the other kinds of dietsSlide2
What does it mean?
Organic- little to no use of pesticide or antibiotics, using equipment that is thoroughly cleaned or different from non-organic, livestock around is organic, a measured distance from non-organic fields to prevent contamination
GMO- genetically modified organism
FDA regulated
For food- plants made with biotechnology to enhance the product
i.e. Changing the seed of the plant so it is more resistant to common pests
FDA found in 1992 that they had no reason to believe that GMO plants were different enough from non-GMO plants to make them labeled differentSlide3
What does it mean
Organic vs. Certified Organic
USDA regulated
USDA may not necessarily know who is selling organic if they are not certified
Not everyone is required to be certified
If gross income is less than $5000/ year certification is not required
Supposed to be following same legalities
Certified Organic- Non- GMO
Natural
Any company can put natural on their product, is not restricted wording
Non-GMO
Does not mean it is organicSlide4
What’s better
Always wash produce, no matter what is on it
Personal beliefs and preference
Industry on both sides have too much money to know what is factual
Getting 5 servings a day most important
Cost difference
Personal and community gardens
Bringing farmers markets in the community
Does not mean it is organic or non-GMO just because it is from a farmer’s marketSlide5
What to look forSlide6

Gluten free diets started because of allergies and sensitivities

Wheat flour is fortified with b-vitamins and iron, which was required by the FDA- cut down on neural tube defects in babies by 80% due to folic acid
Substitutions will lack fortificationSlide7
Vegan and Vegetarian
Vegetarian- no consumption of animals
Vegan- no consumption of animals or animal by-products
Milk, eggs, honey
Nutrients that will be harder to include in diet

Bad eating habits are not due to having a diet with animal products, excluding meat from your diet is a personal decisionSlide8
True food allergies and sensitivities
Be aware of cross-contamination
Make other’s aware when you’re not in charge of your intake
Whole foods should not be eliminated from the diet without medical reason or without replacing nutrients that need to beSlide9
