Steps of PMD screening in dental clinic1) risk- patients in dental clinics were screened with visual inspection 2) those who were identified with positive lesion were suggested to refer for biopsy for the definite diagnosis 3) they were advised to quit their risk behaviors of oral cancer 4) those who had lesion were followed up.

7. Program implementation1) training dental personnel in oral cancer, oral lesion and screening methods 2) organizing the meeting to share knowledge and experience among dental personnel in the program 3) monitoring the program in their settings 4) providing screening manuals, and printed medias for personnel and patients.

8. Program tested between 2008-2014. 1st study in 2008-2009, 5,193 dental patients in 4 provinces (aged 18 years old and more who smoked and 40 years old up) were screened and found oral cancer rate at 2 per 1,000 screened patients. 2nd study in 2010- 2011, 8,861 dental patients in 12 provinces were screened and 67 patients were identified with positive lesions. (can not follow up all patients for biopsy)3rd study in 2012-2014 in NakhonPathom and Suphanburi provinces, the screening was done in 40+ years old patients with smoking, alcohol drinking, and betel nuts chewing. There were 13,624 patients were screened and found that every 1,000 patients screened, 1.5 patients were diagnosed with Potentially Malignant Disorders (PMDs) and Oral cancer (OC). 4th study in 2012-2014 in 8 provinces of the 6th Heath Region, screening in all dental patients aged 40 years old and up,including risk and non-risk patients, the total of 55,065 patients were screened found that rate of oral cancer was 0.5 per 1000.

9. conclusionThe program could identify Suspected PMD at the rate of 6, 8, and 7 per 1,000 screened patients. Identified PMD and oral cancer at the rate of 2, 1.5 and 0.5 per 1,000 screened patients. The program showed the higher rate of oral cancer detected than report by the National Cancer Institute.

10. suggestion oral cancer screening should be done by trained dental personnel to assure their knowledge and skills develop the referral system, follow up and consultation guidelines.
