Taking the Landscape Architect Registrat
Taking the Landscape Architect Registration Examination (LARE)OSLAB Advice for Exam Candidates In 2011, the Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Boards (CLARB) released a report titled “Determinants of Success Research Study” that identified factors that lead to successful performance on the Landscape Architect Registration Examination (LARE). This study looked at education, work experience, preparation and skills factors. Based on the findings of this studyand experience working with exam candidatesOSLAB offers the followingpointersCandidates with an accredited landscape architecture degree (LAAB or CSLA) tend to do better on the LARE compared to those with accredited landscape architecture degree or other degreeAn individual withoutaccredited landscape architecture degree may need to undertake additional personal study. Candidates tend to do better Sections 1 and 2of the LARE when takencloser to college graduation rather than waiting to gainwork experience in landscape architecture. However… Diversified work experience stormwater management, planting design, land use planning, contract administration, construction practices and materials, governmental work, institutional work, residential design, environmental management, etc.) can help a candidate with completion of the exam. Candidates will need to draw on a variety of skills such as technical thinking, spatial reasoning, computer drawing, problem solving, etc. Candidates should consider studyingalone and in groupsas part of exam preparationAlso, CLARB has found (not surprisingly) that more study time equates to better performance. Make use of CLARB’s exam resources. CLARB offers a study reference list, YouTube videos, and LARE orientation guide candidate for free and sample exams for purchase. https://www.clarb.org/Candidates/Pages/default.aspx Remember to also make use of practice problems provided via the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA)http://www.asla.org/lareprep.aspx the Oregon chapterof ASLA about the availability of LARE preparation sessionsThefactors are generally believed to help candidates master the LARE. However, every person and situation is uniqueand the above pointers may not be a perfect fit for all candiates.OSLAB wishes candidates all the best for their journey through the LARE.
