You Decide!
During the late nineteenth century into the early twentieth century America experiences a wave of industrialism driven by a group of men known as
industrialists
. There is no doubt that these industrialists were driven by one motive, and that was wealth. However, historians and others debate the title to
bestow
on these men – that of “
captains of industry
” or “
robber barons
”!Slide2

The Research
Your
first task is to use primary and secondary sources to examine each individual from multiple perspectives, gathering information about their business practices and determining the judgments that historians, economists, and others have made about each industrialist.
Why did their business thrive? How did they/their business contribute to the unprecedented growth of the Gilded Age? How did they make so much money? Were their business practices always ethical? How did they treat their workers? What was the overall impact of their business success? Did they help in any philanthropic ventures? What character traits did they exhibit? What is their reputation as a businessman? What opinions do historians and economists hold about them?Slide4

Were the industrial entrepreneurs of the 19
th
Century "robber barons" or "captains of industry"?
In extending the title of robber baron to these men, we emphasize the cruel and self-centered entrepreneurs who took advantage of the worker, whether it be immigrant, female, or child to accumulate wealth. The factory was a place where the worker experienced harsh conditions and poor pay.
By identifying these individuals as captains of industry, we offer a positive impression of their achievements as men of inventiveness whose hard work and ingenious strategies transformed the American economy of the post-Reconstruction era and the early 20th
century. These men are to also be honored for their charitable activities (philanthropy).Slide6

Firelight (A 55 Word Story)
Firelight -
Embers flicker in crisp air.
White-hot center of the flame -
cooling to black husks of used wood pulp.
Standing within the fire’s reach,
heated air rising as the body’s blood warms -
shadow-dancing in the reflected light -
to the “hiss/pop/crack” of music played -
a cacophony of wood percussion.
Firelight -
hallowed haunting in the smoky fall night.Slide8Slide9Slide10Slide11Slide12
