CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIRED FOR MOST LICENSE RENEWALS D on’t forget your Continuing Medical Education. The Oklahoma State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision (Medical Board) credentials and licenses over 22,000 medical doctors and other health professionals in our state. Most of these professions require documented completion of a specified number of Continuing Medical Education or Continuing Education credits as a prerequisite for license renewal. On renewal forms, the Medical Board as ks practitioners to verify completion of CME or CE requirements. The Medical Board’s Licensing Division audits a random sample of licensees every month for proof of CME or CE completion. A false statement regarding CMEs or CEs on the reapplication form co uld result in a mandatory appearance before the Medical Board and possible sanctions which might include the temporary suspension of practice privileges. The Medical Board allows the agency staff some discretion to work with health professionals who may be short of the CME or CE requirements by a few credits. However, those significantly behind in compliance face license suspension and Medical Board sanctions. Older practitioners, those winding down their practices, or physicians no longer concerned wi th maintaining specialty board certification are at particular risk of overlooking the CME or CE requirements. The following is a brief reminder of the Continuing Medical Education and Continuing Education requirements necessary for re - licensure. Since r equirements are specific for each profession and license renewal dates vary, practitioners are encouraged to review their own Practice Act and Administrative Code Rules for details. The Practice Acts and Administrative Code Rules are available on the Medi cal Board homepage, www.okmedicalboard.org Medical Doctors: MDs must renew their licenses annually. MDs must verify completion of 60 hours of Category I Continuing Medical Education Credit during the three y ear period prior to re - licensure. The Oklahoma Legislature also requires th at every two years, physicians document viewing an online training available on the Medical Board’s website regarding Oklaho ma’s Medical Treatment laws . Physician Assistants: PAs must renew their licenses annually and document

Despite age or circumstance, Oklahoma health care professionals who wish to remain fully licensed must meet CME and CE requirement. It’s the law. Podiatrists: Doctors of Podiatry renew their licenses every two years and must verify 60 hours of Continuing Education during that period. Perfusionists: Perfusionists renew their licenses annua lly and must document recertification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusionists or its equivalent. Electrologists: Electrologists renew their licenses annually and must complete 1 . 5 Contact Hours for the previous three - year period. Occupational Therapists and Assistants: OTs and OTAs renew their licenses annually and require 20 Contact Hours for the previous two - year period. Orthotist s and Prosthetists : Orthotists and Prothetists renew their licenses every two years. They must prove certification by the American Board of Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics (ABC) or Board of Orthotist/Prosthetist Certification (BOC) or 30 hours of Continuing Education. Registered Assistants require 10 hours of CE. Registered Technicians must obtain 6 hours. BOC's Board recently approved a plan to sunset the acceptance of new applications for its orthotist, prosthetist, and pedorthi c certifications. BOC will accept applications for these three credentials through July 31, 2016 . See more details at: http://www.bocusa.org/ Pedorthisits: Pedorthists renew their licenses annually. They must obtain 11 CEU points. Physica l Therapists and Assistants: PTs and PTAs rene w their licenses every year. They must document approved Conta ct Hours for the two years ’ CE reporting cycle , at least half must be Category A and three must be ethics included in the APTA Code of Ethics and A PTA Guide for Professional Conduct. Respiratory Care Practitioners: RCPs renew their licenses every two years. They require 12 Continuing Respiratory Care Ed ucations Credits, at least half directly related to clinical practice. Therapeutic Recreation Specialists: TRSs renew their licenses every two years. They mus t document certification by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification or 20 CE hours.
