CAWE Communiqué May 2020 Introduction Welcome to the CAWE Communiqué , designed to provide stakeholders with updates from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) on Animal Welfare in Emergencies. The CAWE Communiqué will be distributed quarterly following the DPIRD Committee for Anima l Welfare in Emergencies (CAWE) meetings and will be made available on the DPIRD w ebpage. May edition items  COVID 19  New CAWE Members  A nimal Welfare in Emergencies webpage u pdate COVID 19 The COVID 19 pandemic, ha s affect ed most sectors including DPIRD and the member organisations of the CAWE. Many of the preparedness projects for animal welfare in emergencies were postponed during this time including the review of the first Natural Hazard Season with the approved State Support Plan – Animal Welfare in Emergencies. The May meeting of the CAWE was an opportunity for member organisations to reconnect and advise on any ongoing issues being faced. Minimal animal welfare concerns were raised however, it was no ted that had COVID - 19 restrictions continued, there was potential of welfare impacts for a significant number of animals such as those involved in the racing industr y . Industries and businesses that have animals are encouraged to forward plan for how they will maintain the ir animals ’ welfare in the event of income loss or sustained closure. New CAWE Members The CAWE welcomed two new members to the May meeting. http://www.nativearc.org.au/ Native ARC Native ARC Inc. is a non - profit wildlife veterinary hospital and rehabilitation facility specialising in wildlife treatment, r ehabilitation and environmental education. They are a registered charity predominantly funded through donations, fundraising and corporat e sponsorship for capital works. Dean Huxley of Native ARC joins the CAWE as a representative of the Wildlife rehabilitation community and is actively engaging with other registered wildlife rehabilitators to establish a network and promote collaboration. Dr Hall is a mixed - practice vet from Perth and outside of private veterinary practice has extensive experience working with Defence , Police and other g overnment agencies in Australia and overseas. He has a strong interest in emerg ency management and disaster relief, assisting in response roles including the Brisbane Floods 2011, Cyclone Yasi 2011, Bushfires 2020 and more. He regularly conducts advanced skill training in canine tactical casualty care for organisations across Austral ia. Dr Hall is President - elect of the A VA WA Division and the addition of local representation of Veterinarians is greatly welcomed to the CAWE. A new series of f actsheets are in development to help owners and carers create their own Plan for Animal Welfare in Emergencies (PAWE). Owners and c arers can also follow DPIRD ’ s social media pages on Facebook and Twitter for helpful reminders on preparing for n atural hazard events such as the recent severe weather event in WA.
