BLEEDING & BLOD CLOTS

What is the “condition or problem “ of the special population

What body systems does the condition effect and how?

What are the exercise testing procedures for the population?

What are the exercise precautions for the population?

What are the exercise and Nutrition recommendations for the population?Slide2

Precautions

1. People

with bleeding disorders have a defect in their

coagulation system

. Frequent bruising is a part of their lives that cannot

be avoided

. For those with severe disease, bleeding into joints

muscles

can occur even with little or no trauma.

2.Parents

must strive for a healthy attitude toward their child’s

participation in physical activities. It is important that

parents provide

a safe environment in which their child can grow

and develop

normally, which includes participation in athletic activities.

In general, inactive, overprotected children have more

frequent, spontaneous

bleeding. A more self-confident, independent

lifestyle usually

brings marked clinical improvement and fewer spontaneous

bleeding

episodes

3. .Children

choose sports for excitement, friendship, and competition.

One of the biggest obstacles to their participation may be their

parents’ fear of injury. Parents should address these concerns by

talking with their children about risks and precautions, and they

should make sure that children use the appropriate safety

equipment.Slide3

Precautions cont.

4. Honest

and open communication between people with

bleeding disorders

, their parents, the HTC team, school personnel

and coaches

is vital. If injuries occur, people should always receive

early and

appropriate

treatment

5.

It is important that people with a bleeding disorder be physically fit.

Joints that are supported by well-developed muscles are better

able to

withstand the traumas of daily living. Stretching,

strengthening, cardiovascular

training, and sports participation are all ways

to achieve

fitness

.

6.

There are many benefits to participating in sports and exercise.

Starting at an early age can build a strong routine that will be

beneficial throughout lifeSlide4

Thrombosis

This is when blood clots form on unbroken blood vessels or on atherosclerotic (hardened) plaques in the arteries and can cause heart attacks or strokes.

Blood clots forming in the veins of the legs may cause a painful condition called phlebitis which can break away and travel to the lungs to cause a dangerous condition called pulmonary embolus

Blood Clot proteins form in liver-hepatitis, cirrhosis and other diseases of the liver can reduce normal blood clotting, causing a person to bleed excessively

coagulation can effect innate immune system by the ability to increase permeability and act as chemotactic agents for phagocytic cells immune systemSlide5

Some Diseases

Hemophilia A B

Von

Willebrand

Disease

Hemarthrosis

-bleeding in joints

Hematoma – bleeding in muscles – disabling arthritis

Slide6

CAN I EXERCISE

CERTAINLY YES…is the answer however this population should

PLAY IT SAFE

: 1

st

Always consult with your Hemophilia Treatment Center prior to engaging in any sport or exercise regimen

Avoid: Heavy contact sports

wrestling,football

, hockey

Soccer, basketball, baseball present risks but are not off limits

Recommended: SPLASHING DASHING BIKING Slide7
Slide8

Body Systems effected

Lungs- pulmonary embolism life threatening blockage of arteries in lungs (often forms in DVT)

Brain- Transient Ischemia Attack TIA or mini stroke

Legs, Arms, (Deep Vein Thrombosis) persistent swelling of extremity

Heart -Arterial thrombi is a heart attack along w/thrombus

anginga

pectoris lack of blood supply to heart results in severe chest pain

Kidneys –renal vein thrombosis which is often associated with trauma to the abdomen

Joints – they may

develop severe arthritis Slide9

Inherited affect all ages/sex

Hemophilia A B

Von

Willebrand

Disease

Hemarthrosis

-bleeding in joints

Hematoma – bleeding in muscles – disabling arthritisSlide10

Hemophilia A and B

Increased weight strains joints and muscles, including increased bleeds in susceptible joints.

Be aware of portion sizes, read label avoid snacks

Increase Consumption of fruits Veggies to help maintain intestinal health

Try to eat at least half of your grains from whole grain productsSlide11

Von Willebrand

Factor

Effect both sexes equallySlide12

Menorrhagia

Heavy

mestraul

periods: heavy bleeding creates Iron Deficiency, Vitamin K Deficiency

Nutrition

Vegetarian Diets decrease mood swings and water retention

Maintain Normal Blood Volume and Circulation

Spinach chard, green

beans,broccoli,asparagus

, kale greens peas and carrots –increase Vitamin K

Well fortified cereals, leafy greens, Liver

Vitamin B-12

Vitamin B-6

Vitanin

E- avoid vitamin e supplements that may increase bleeding

Folic AcidRed wine (in moderation) good for hear and reduction in platelet aggregation or fibrinogen levels (blood

clotter)Omega 3 Fatty Acids have blood thinning properties help prevent stroke Reduce risk of Thrombosis AvoidFoods rich in Vitamin K which encourage blood clots such as kale, spinach broccoli peaches and bananasSalicylates- inhibit blood clotting Aspiriin, herbs and spices curry, cayenne, thyme

Fruits strawberries, organges grapes . Vinegar honey and ciderOmega 3 Fatty Acids have blood thinning properties help prevent stroke Slide14

Nutrition for Bleeding

Maintain a healthy weight, limit use of butter, stick margarine, shortening and lard- increase Good fats – canola oils & olive

Several nutrients in blood cell production such as iron, protein, copper, vitamin c, vitamin B-12, B6, vitamin e and folic acid

Avoid vitamin E supplements since they may increase risk of bleeding

During a bleed .75 mg is lost w/each tablespoon f blood---liver, lean red meat and poultry best and most readily absorbed iron sources,

Leafy green vegetables, broccoli, dried beans, grains and raisins combined with good sources if

Vit

. C enhance iron absorbanceSlide15

WORD OF WISDOM

“Spend your

caloires

as wisely as you would your money!”
