POSITIVE COACHING SCOTLAND
AGREED CONSEQUENCES
There will be occasions when the agreed standards and expectations are not adhered to – then what?
It is important that coaches can enforce the behavioural standards that are agreed within the club – to do this, agreeing the consequences is very important.
Agreeing the standards and behaviours with the young athletes increases the likelihood of them being adhered to – the consequences are exactly the same. Discuss the consequences with the athlete committee and agree what will happen should any of the athletes break the rules. Take some time to review the consequences of breaking the rules within your club: Do you have a protocol for what happens when an athlete breaks the rules? Are athletes aware of the consequences? Were they involved with setting the consequences? Agreed consequences encourage collective ownership and encourage young people to be responsible for their responsibilities/rules – and are fully aware what would happen if they step out of line.
