Volunteering in the community is a big thing here at UCL.
We’re home to the biggest university volunteering department in the UK – the VSU.
Last year, over 1900 students took part in projects across London.
The VSU has links with over 400 charities and supports 72 different student led projects.Charities UCL students volunteer at include:IntoUniversity - Mentoring school students to help them achieve personally and academically. The Passage – a drop in centre supporting people who are homeless.Keen London – sports and arts activities for children with learning disabilitiesFoodcycle – using good food that would otherwise go to waste to cook lunch for people in Somerstown.Westminster Befriend A Family – running swimming sessions for children from low income families.Slide6
The VSU has loads of one-off volunteering that you can dip into – environmental conservation, fundraising, cultural and sporting events, community festivals ….
You can set up your own activities as part of the VSU Student Led projects scheme. The VSU has staff support, training, and grants to help you.
For example
Hospital Play Teams – run fun activities for children within UCH and Royal Free HospitalsVIBE – befriending programme for people with visual impairmentsThe Big One – UCL students helping school students to put on a big, professional standard musical production. The VSU also offer a two-week team placement scheme (GC Voluntary Sector) as part of the UCL’s Global Citizenship Programme. It’s only open to 2nd and final year students – but remember about it for next year!To find out more about anything the VSU does, visit www.uclu.org/volunteers, email them at volunteering@ucl.ac.uk, or drop into their offices on the first floor of the Lewis’s Building.Slide7
