ROTARY STEERABLE ASSIST Rotary Steerable Assist Motor Requirements Motors built t run in conjunction with rotary steerable tools (RSTs) require specific features to maximize reliability and performance when paired with rotary steerables. The RSTs are heavily dependent on hydraulics to work properly, so the fluid bypassed through the axial bearings for lubrication needs to be managed. 1) 0.015 – 0.025” Radial Bearing Clearance* Both upper and lower radial bearings gaps should be within 0.015 – 0.025” to reduce the amount of flw bypass through the mud lube bearing section. This also assists in minimizing bending stress on the shaft that can occur as a result of the additional BHA components below the motor. *In the event tat both radials do not fit this criteria, at least one MUST fall within the 0.015 – 0.025” liit and approval must be given by both the salesman responsible for the job and engineering. ! www.bicodrilling.com 2) Flexshaft Transmission A flexshaft transmission must be used on RST tools. Since the motors must be straight with a fixed housing, a flxshaft offers the strongest and most rliable performance. Additionally the flexshaft is much stronger and safer in the event there is a BHA failure. 3) Pin-Down Driveshaft A pin-down connection on the driveshaft is required to eliminate the need for a crossover sub. This reduces the number of connections, thus reducing the potential for failure. It lso lowers the bending stress applied to the lower end by moving the load closer t the radial bearing . Flow Bypass Estimation The charts below can be used as a reference for estimating the flid bypass based on different radial bearing fit scenarios, and backpressure values. !
