Prevention of Infections Related to Peritoneal Dialysis Catheter Site Lyudmyla Foka Abstract Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is considered as one of the renal replacement therapy options for patient with end - stage renal disease. This therapy requires thorough preparation and education of the patient, nurse, and caregiver because improper application of the therapy leads to multiple health risks including infection. This paper will discuss the preventative measures which providers of care should take to avoid infections related to the PD catheter. Additionally, it will provide an overview of the PD pathophysiology, infection associated risks related to this therapy, proper PD catheter site care, signs and symptoms of infection for assessment, and implica tions for nursing practice. The purpose of the paper is to develop better understanding about PD catheter care and therapy - related risks for infection and expand knowledge on the evidence - based practice for management of PD catheters. Review and analysis o f credible literature and up - to - date evidence - based practice information about the PD catheter care will be done to reach that objective. The acquired knowledge and findings will be used to provide additional education to nurses and caregivers in performin g PD catheter care in the inpatient setting.
