YA members develop the technical and entrepreneurial skills to launch their businesses Learning  NCBA CLUSA’s cooperative model demonstrates that youth leadership and sense of membership are central to learning, testing ideas and taking on responsibilities  Successful youth group businesses are a function of good mentorship, strong VSLAs and private sector links  Building trust between youth and private sector partners is critical to deepening youth participation in markets Youth Empowerment Through Agriculture YETA strives to empower youth between 15-24 years through agriculture using its “Learn, Engage, Build” model. It creates long-term engagement that deepens and broadens the skillsets of Ugandan youth for the long run, integrating numeracy, literacy and life skills with technical expertise in agriculture, business, entrepreneurship and management. YETA builds on the successes of the Uganda Conservation Farming Initiative (UCFI) – NCBA CLUSA’s $8.4 million USDA-funded program in Northern Uganda, which took a value chain approach to increasing smallholder farmer profitability through conservation farming. Parents and leaders of Area Cooperative Enterprises established under UCFI mentor YETA youth. YETA is being implemented in Dokolo, Kole, Kiryandongo and Masindi Districts. Youth enterprises focus on maize, vegetables, sunflower, soy, livestock, as well as trade and other services across these value chains. Achievements  14 Youth-led Primary Cooperatives formed and 3 fully registered  27,130 youth trained in governance, agro entrepreneurship, foundational skills and VSLA.  813 Youth Associations (YA’s) formed, strengthened, and have access to land to practice agriculture and launch and incubate their group businesses  18,419 youth established individual businesses while 6,469 youth have started Community Based Solution Provider (CBSP) businesses such as weeding, spraying, irrigation services, being agents for buyers, and pre- and post-harvest and para-vet services  19,102 youth engaged in savings through 795 VSLAs which are financing retail shops, solar lamps to charge phones for money, improved inputs and other b

He joined the YETA Project in November 2016. Herbert developed ambition and inspiration after participating in the program’s foundational skills, financial literacy and agro entrepreneurship training. Following a visioning exercise conducted by YETA, Herbert began planning his return to education. From the knowledge and skills gained from YETA, he started planting maize and soy bean. He earned an estimated 3,000,000 UGX (825 USD) in two years as a result. This income enabled him to finance a one-year certificate course in Medical Records that he pursued during weekends between 2017 and 2018 at Hoima Nursing School. Herbert is also chairperson of Tulihamu Kahara YA and has become a respected public speaker, farmer and model youth. He became a source of knowledge and is consulted by others on many issues in the village. This landed him a leadership position as a Youth Pastor at his local Pentecostal Church in Kahara village. To date, he has graduated with a certificate in Medical Records and intends to pursue a diploma course in the future.
