8. EXPLANATION There was a very good-looking young man, named Hughie Erskine. He was popular and kind. However, he was not very clever and had no money. He kept changing his job but always failed. Finally he stopped working and lived on money given to him by an old aunt. He loved a girl named Laura Merton, the daughter of a retired Colonel. The Colonel would only allow them to get married if Hughie had ten thousand pounds of his own.  One day, Hughie visited his friend, Alan Trevor, who was a painter. When Hughie came, Alan was painting a model. The model was a beggar-man. Hughie felt sorry for the model, so he gave him a sovereign. Later that night, Hughie met Alan at Palette Club. They had a talk. Hughie found out from Alan that the model was actually not a beggar-man, but a millionaire, named Baron Hausberg. Hughie went home unhappily, whereas Alan laughed loudly.  The next morning, a messenger from Baron Hausberg came and brought him a letter. The letter contained a cheque for ten thousand pounds which was a wedding present to Hugh Erskine and Laura Merton from Baron Hausberg. On the day of the marriage, Alan Trevor was the best man and the Baron made a speech at the wedding breakfast. Alan said, "Millionaire models are rare enough, but model millionaires are rarer still!"

9. Lets’s inferStudy the opening paragraph. Which phrase (or sentence) do you think describes Hughie Erskine best? Why do you think so?Why would Colonel Merton ‘not to hear of any marriage’ between his daughter and Hughie? Why do you think he said, ‘Come to me… when you have got ten thousand pounds of your own…’?Did Hughie feel sorry for the old man in Trevor’s studio? How can you tell? ( Think of something he said and something he did to support your answer.).Look at the paragraph beginning with ‘The old man was surprised…’ Why do you think the old man smiled? Was it because he was grateful?Trevor told the old model everything about Hughie. Did Hughie approve of what Trevor had done? Why?‘I didn’t understand why he was so interested to know all about you. But now I do.’ Did Trevor really understand why Baron Hausberg was so interested in Hughie? How do you know?‘A wedding present to Hughie Erskine and Laura Merton, from an old beggar.’ Why do you think the Baron did not write ‘from Baron Hausberg’?

10. AnswersThe sentence- He never said a clever or even an unpleasant thing in his life, shows that Hughie Erskine was an ordinary man, lovable but not intelligent.Hughie's father had died. Hughie lived on a little money, he tried many jobs but did not like any of them so, the Colonel did not agree to let the jobless man married to his daughter and ask him to come when he earn his own ten thousand pounds.Yes, Hughie felt sorry for old man as he lost so miserable, he told his friend that the man (beggar) ought to get a sort of the artist profit. Hughie felt sad for the old man and searched his pocket to give money if he had and found a gold coin, and he gave it to the beggar. The old man was surprised at Hughie’s generosity and kindness. He smiled because he wasn’t actually a beggar, but a millionaire posing as a beggar. The old man might have been grateful and realised that Hughie had a golden heart and it moved him. When Hughie heard that the old man seemed interested in him and Trevor had told him everything about Hughie, he did not approve of this and was shocked. He felt that beggar will be wanting more alms, and he begin thinking to give the other things like clothes etc. Alan Trevor did not understand why his model, Baron Hausberg was so interested in Hughie but when he come to know that Hughie mistaken Baron to be a beggar and gave him a sovereign. He thought Baron would cut that in the bank and say its interest to Hughie but he didn’t really understand the real reason.Hughie generosity had moved the millionaire so he gifted Hughie and Laura a cheque for ten thousand pounds, the amount without which marriage couldn’t be possible and he signed it from an old beggar, because in these words lays the whole story of the model millionaire.
