3. Explain the difference between continuous and discontinuous variation, and plot graphs to show bothVariation, Continuous, Discontinuous, Genetic, Inherited, EnvironmentalDefine and distinguish between continuous and discontinuous dataDescribe examples of continuous and discontinuous variationPlot bar charts or line graphs to show continuous or discontinuous variation data

4. Suggest some examples of continuous and discontinuous variation. Justify your answer. An example of continuous variation would be… this is because…An example of discontinuous variation would be… this is because…

5. Continuous variation:Human height is an example of continuous variation. It ranges from that of the shortest person in the world to that of the tallest person. Any height is possible between these values. So it is continuous variation. For any species a characteristic that changes gradually over a range of values shows continuous variation. Examples of such characteristics are:heightweightHow many more can you think of?

6. Continuous variation:If you record the heights of a group of people and draw a graph of your results, it usually looks something like this. This is called normal distribution.

7. Discontinuous variation:A characteristic of any species with only a limited number of possible values shows discontinuous variation. Human blood group is an example of discontinuous variation. In the ABO blood group system, only four blood groups are possible (A, B, AB or O). There are no values in between, so this is discontinuous variation. Here are some examples:blood groupgender (male or female)eye colourHow many more can you think of?

8. Discontinuous variation:

9. Categorise the following statements into continuous and discontinuous. 1) Variations are predictable.2) Already present in the population.3) variations is unpredictable.4) They are very common5) Also known as mutations or sports.6) Appear occasionally.7) Also called fluctuations.8) They are very common.9) Variations are new variations though similar variations might have occurred previously.10) They disturb the genetic system of the organism.

11. Define continuous and discontinuous variation. Describe at least three examples of each type of variation in humansState which type of graph would be drawn for each type of variationDraw a graph of the following data:Challenge: Apply knowledge of variation to correlation shown in graphsEye colourNumber of peopleBlue7Green5Brown15Hazel3
