Slide2Are food intolerances fact or fad?
Nowadays more and more people buy products that are suitable for food intolerance but, is it due to an actual increase of people who suffer from these types of conditions or is its consumption becoming “trendy”?

Lactose is the sugar that is in milk. Our bodies use an enzyme called lactase to break down that sugar so we can absorb it into our bodies, but people with lactose intolerance don´t have enough lactase.

is
a

the ingestion of gluten leads to damage in the small
intestine. Gluten is found in various cereal grains such as wheat, barley, rye, oats…
Slide7OBJECTIVES
Our objective is to study the reasons of the increasing demand of lactose and gluten free products in order to clarify if this rise is something necessary or just a trend.METHODSFor this aim we are going to conduct a survey amongst Victoria Kent students about their use of the mentioned products and we are also going to compare the prices of regular products and lactose or gluten free products.

Slide11ConclusionDespite
the percentage of people who suffer lactose intolerance (3%) and celiac disease (4.5%) is very low, around a fourth of the surveyed usually eat lactose or gluten free foods. This may happen due to the belief that these kind of products are healthier. According to the surveys, around a 25% percent of the people think that the mentioned products are cheaper, but they are wrong. Since companies benefit from the increasing demand of lactose and gluten free products and they raise the prices. Lactose-free products are a 42.8% more expensive than regular ones and gluten-free foods are a 163. 05% more expensive. This fact causes a real problem to people who actually are lactose intolerant or celiac and need to buy those products on a daily basis.
