CONTRACEPTIVE SPONGE What is it? A soft disposable polyurethane (non - latex) foam device containing a spermicide that is placed in the vagina before sexual intercourse . How does it work?  Fits over the cervix  The s ponge traps and absorbs semen and the spermicide impairs the sperm  Effective for up to 12 hours Advantages  Does not contain hormones  Can be used by individuals who are breastfeeding  Can be used by individuals who smoke  One size fits all  Does not require a prescription  Can be used for mu ltiple acts of intercourse within a twelve hour time period Considerations  Must be available at the time of intercourse  Must be left in place for 6 hours following last intercourse but no longer the 12 hours  Requires proper insertion technique . The spong e is not sold or inserted at The Clinic.  Spermicide contained in the sponge may cause vaginal irritation that may increase the risk for contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs).  Cannot be used by people who are allergic to spermicides  If left in the vagina longer than the recommended time, symptoms of t oxic s hock s yndrome may occur How to use the sponge  Insert into the vagina at least 15 minutes prior to intercourse  There are various brands on the market. Make sur e to follow package instruction Typical Effectiveness Rate  68 - 84% effective Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Protection The contraceptive sponge does not protect against STIs. Use a separate condom, dental dam, latex glove for each sex act.
