Bloom’s Ball Project Odyssey Major assessment 1

Initial directions You may choose to work individually or with one partner from this class period to complete this assessment. You will not receive individual scores, so you are responsible for choosing your own partner keeping this fact in mind. You may not change your decision once the project begins. After you have completed the content for each circle, carefully cut out twelve circles using the ones that you have been provided. Do not assemble. You will use Odyssey as the text to complete this assessment. No outside sources are required or permitted. Before completing each of the following steps, be certain to observe where the fold lines (the chord lines on the edges of the template circle) are. Do not write or draw the assignments on the outside of these lines. You may fold the edges up at this point to remind you not to write in this area. Do NOT assemble the ball until you have completed writing on all pieces.

What Goes in the Circles 1. Knowledge : WRITE the title and author of your book in the circle. Plan the lettering to use up the entire space and make it attractive. The title design should reflect one of the five elements of the epic: character, setting, conflict, style, theme BE SURE TO SPELL EVERYTHING CORRECTLY! Write the number at the bottom of the circle, type the FULL MLA citation for the selection, and be sure to include your MLA heading in the bottom point of the circle. 2. Application: Provide a paragraph explanation of the story’s setting including place, time, and social environment and how it impacts the plot. This should be the large-scale setting, not the individual setting of specific adventures. Include cited textual evidence to support your response. This will be submitted to TurnItIn.com for originality. Draw a picture or map to represent the setting of the story. Since you have ample time to prepare this illustration, it must be of the highest quality and exceptionally detailed even if you must trace some elements. You MAY NOT cut images from another source. It must be created by hand.

What Goes in the Circles 3. Comprehension : DESCRIBE the main character(s) of the story . You must identify the protagonist, th e main antagonist, and a character you choose. Identify these characters correctly for full credit. Include both physical and personality characteristics in your description, as provided. Be certain to parenthetically cite your evidence for this information in correct MLA format . Each character should be described in a separate paragraph. This will be submitted to TurnItIn.com for originality . 4. Analysis : ILLUSTRATE a picture of the most exciting, the funniest, or the saddest part of the epic. Since you have ample time to prepare this illustration, it must be of the highest quality and exceptionally detailed even if you must trace some elements. You MAY NOT cut images from another source. It must be created by hand. Provide a paragraph explanation of WHY this part is the most exciting, the funniest, or the saddest with at least two pieces of cited textual evidence.

What Goes in the Circles 5 and 6. ANALYSIS: On these two circles WRITE a summary (in your own words) of the plot and major conflicts in the story. Include key and important events. Use the entire space on both circles. Remember, this should be your own summary and will be submitted through TurnItIn.com 7. ANALYSIS: Identify the hero of the story and explains how he/she meets the characteristics of an epic hero . Refer to your epic hero characteristic notes. Use specific details from the text as your evidence and support . Be sure to parenthetically cite at least three textual examples as evidence to support your claim. This will be submitted to TurnItIn.com for originality.

What Goes in the Circles 8-12. APPLICATION: Complete EACH of the following steps for ALL of the five stages in the hero’s journey (see list of Five Stages in your Hero’s Journey notes). This will be submitted to TurnItIn.com for originality. One circle, one stage. Five total stages = five separate circles. Determine which event in the epic represents this same stage in the hero’s journey. Write an explanation of the event as it occurs in the text and explain how it represents that step in the hero’s journey. For example: Woody is unwilling to go retrieve Buzz until Bo Peep speaks with him about his beliefs and values, which is the Departure stage of the Hero’s Journey. Woody is hesitant to go on the journey because if Buzz “ hadn't shown up with [his] stupid little cardboard spaceship and taken away everything that was important to me ...” ( Toy Story, 1995), Woody would still be Andy’s favorite toy. This competition is what causes Woody to deny the call to adventure, which is in Stage One of the Hero’s Journey.

Directions for Completion Decorate the edges at this time. Use one of the themes from the book or make up your own. Your decorations should be on the folded edges only. The edges will be folded up on your finished project. They should clearly relate to the elements of the epic and not simply be colored or irrelevantly decorated. On the due date, bring your cutout circles to class. Do not preassemble the ball. Any completed projects that are submitted prior to the due date will be eligible for bonus points. When all steps have been completed and all the edges are decorated, staple the circles together in class. Start with one circle and staple to a second circle. On the second circle, staple another circle on the far side of the second circle. Be sure to always skip one space before stapling the new circle. Once you have five circles together, you can close them. Using a sixth circle, staple to the bottom of the five circles. Repeat the above for the remaining 6 circles. Then place one set of circles over the other and staple the edges together.

Other important information This major assessment is project-based and is not eligible for unit repair. Ther e will be a checkpoint assessment for circles 1-3. This will be a major assessment score. The date will be posted and discussed by your teacher. Content can be handwritten very neatly or typed with an attractive font. The assembly of the Bloom’s Ball should not be completed prior to submission to your teacher. Thi s will result in a deduction of points. Assembly will take place during class after the content has been assessed by your teacher. Correct assembly will account for a portion of your overall assessment grade. Plagiarism, cheating, or other instances of academic dishonesty are clearly prohibited and carry serious academic consequences. Early submission will be rewarded, late submissions will be penalized. Pay attention to class reminders, deadlines, updates, and explanations which will be added to this content and requirements.
