Overview Data on population dynamics and distribution are key to understanding human interaction with the environment and possible responses to global environmental change. Developed in partnership with the International Tropical Agriculture Center (CIAT), Population of the World (GPW) version 3 is a unique global demographic data set that depicts the distribution of human population across the globe by converting census data to grids. It is the most accurate version of GPW to date, with more than three times the amount of input data as version two, and twenty times the input data of the original version. Data Go to http://sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu/gpw for maps, documentation, and data. The global demographic data set provides consistent population and population density estimates referenced to a grid of 2.5 minute X 2.5 minute latitude-longitude quadrilateral cells, for 1990–2000 five-year increments. Projections to 2015 are also available. Data are available for download at global, regional, and country levels in three grid formats: ArcInfo, Band Interleaved by Line (BIL), and ASCII. Extensive data quality information is available for each country, including source information, the number comparisons between GPW and UN national totals.
